Attractive Smith & Wesson No. 3 Russian
Second Model Single Action Revolver with Shoulder Stock - Serial
no. 503, 44 S&W Russian cal., 7 inch solid rib bbl., blue finish, walnut grips.
Manufactured c. 1873 to 1878, this is an extremely attractive example of a Smith & Wesson
No. 3 Russian Second Model revolver, fitted for a desirable shoulder stock by the S&W factory
during its original production. The Russian Second Model revolvers were procured in large numbers
by the Russian government, with smaller Japanese and Turkish contracts also being fulfilled. So, while
85,200 total were produced, there were only around 6,200 commercial variations made and only a small
number of them were equipped with shoulder stocks, making them quite scarce, and thus seldom ever
seen. The Second Model fitted with a shoulder stock is by far the most rare of the three Russian models
produced with stocks and only a few are known in collectors hands today. These commercial guns were
numbered in the 32800-39000 serial number range, which was a continuation of the No. 3 American
serial numbers.

LOT 3117
Very Attractive Gold Plated Smith & Wesson New Model No. 3
Single Action Revolver with Target Sights, Checkered Trigger,
and Case - Serial no. 34122, 44 S&W Russian cal., 6 1/2 inch solid rib bbl.,
gold finish, hard rubber grips. Manufactured prior to 1899, this is an example of a
period upgraded New Model No. 3 revolver with an attractive gold plated finish,
target sights, and a checkered target type trigger. Much like their Colt Single Action
Army competitor, these revolvers remained a popular sidearm by those in all walks of life who had need
for one, even well after the advent of semi-automatic pistols. These revolvers were also extremely popular
among target shooters, in part due to the success of Walter Winans who favored them. Smith & Wesson
produced a special target version of the New Model No. 3, which had its own serial number range, but many
standard configuration revolvers were upgraded to target configuration like this example. This particular revolver is
marked with the standard single line address on top of the barrel rib and has the caliber marking on the left of the barrel.
The Smith & Wesson trademark is on the right of the frame. The matching serial number is marked on the butt, rear face
of the cylinder, and rear face of the upper barrel lugs. The bottom of the barrel latch/rear sight is numbered “193”. It is
fitted with a pinned blade front sight with a vein bead, adjustable notch rear sight, a checkered target pattern trigger,
and a pair of later replacement checkered hard rubber grips with a Smith & Wesson monograms at the tops. Includes a
green felt wrapped hard case fitted for the revolver, two screwdrivers, a bore brush, and an oil bottle.
CONDITION: Fine, retains 60% of the attractive, period applied, gold plated finish, which has thinned in some areas showing the bright nickel plating beneath. 70% of the original case colors remain, most prominently on the
hammer and sheltered areas of the trigger guard. The grips are fine with some light handling marks and crisp checkering. Hammer occasionally hangs up; otherwise mechanically functions. The case is good with some moderate
wear and some loss of the felt wrapping material. A very attractive, gold plated, Smith & Wesson New Model No. 3!
Provenance: The Cam & Deb Cooper Collection.
Estimate: 3,000 - 5,000
The top of the barrel is marked with the standard one line address and patent dates ending with “RUSSIAN
MODEL”. The serial number is only partial visible on the butt (“35[ ][ ]7”) due to the notch cut for the shoulder
stock, a common trait of the stocked Russian models, while the full serial number “35497” is stamped inside the
right grip. The assembly number “503” is stamped on the right of the grip frame, rear face of the cylinder, and
the bottom of the barrel latch. It is fitted with a pinned blade front sight, distinctive small screw on the top strap,
notch rear sight on top of the barrel latch, a pronounced knuckle on the back strap, a spur trigger guard, a lanyard
loop on the butt, and a pair of smooth walnut grips. The back strap was cut in production for the fitting of the
shoulder stock, with a rectangular notch in the butt and two mounting points higher up the back strap, and has a
smooth metal buttplate as seen on all the original No. 3 Russian shoulder stocks.
CONDITION: Very fine, retains 85% plus of the original blue finish and strong traces of the original case
colors with some light wear and handling marks, some brown freckling on the cylinder, and a few minor
dings. The grips are also very fine with some scattered light dings and scratches. Mechanically
excellent. The restored stock is also very fine with 85% of the blue finish, a discreet splice in
the toe on the refurbished wood, and a few light handling marks. One of the finest known
examples of a most rare and desirable S&W shoulder stocked 2nd Model Russian that one
could hope to find.
Provenance: The Tom Selleck Collection.
Estimate: 10,000 - 15,000
