Scarce Civil War Era U.S. Martially Inspected
Remington Type I Split Breech Rolling Block Saddle Ring Carbine - NSN, 46 RF cal., 20 inch
round bbl., blue/casehardened finish, walnut stock. These Type I split breech carbines were manufactured by Savage
Revolving Arms Co. for Remington to fulfill a U.S. Government contract for 5,000, with completed deliveries
from February through April of 1865, per “Flayderman’s Guide” (9th Edition, 5E-078). Approximately 3,600
were repurchased from the government by Remington in 1870 and then resold to the French for use in the
Franco-Prussian War, lending to their scarcity on the collectors market today. Features a pinched blade front
sight, notch rear sight with folding leaf graduated up to 500 yards, two-line Remington address and patent
markings on the upper tang, and saddle bar with saddle ring on the left of the frame. Single letter inspection
initials marked on various components, with two bordered script inspection cartouches stamped on the left
stock wrist. Matching serial number “4344” marked on the left front surface of the
frame and on the bottom of the barrel, concealed by the forearm.
CONDITION: Fine, retains 75% original blue finish, 40% muted original case colors
on the frame with smooth brown and gray patina on the
balance, a few small patches of minor corrosion, and distinct
edges and markings in the metal. Wood is also fine, with
tight fitment, a few minor scratches and handling marks, and
defined cartouches. Mechanically excellent.

Attractive Civil War U.S. Sharps New Model 1863 Breech Loading Percussion
Saddle Ring Carbine - Serial no. C,30121, 52 cal., 22 inch round bbl., blue/casehardened finish, walnut stock.
Approximately 20,000 New Model 1863 carbines were manufactured between 1863-1865 during the Civil War, according
to information in “Flayderman’s Guide” (9th Edition, 5F-020). Offered here is very fine example of a Civil
War Sharps New Model 1863 percussion carbine that shows minimal evidence of use. Features a
blade front sight and Lawrence patent ladder notch rear sight, “NEW MODEL 1863”
marked on top of the breech of the barrel, Sharps 1848 patent date marked on the
left of the receiver with the Lawrence 1859 patent date and Sharps 1852 patent date
on the lock, single letter inspection marks stamped on various components, “N.S.P”
inspection initials stamped on the sling bar plate and top of the stock ahead of the
buttplate, and two boxed script “TWR” (Thomas W. Russell) inspection cartouches stamped on
the left stock wrist.
CONDITION: Very fine, retains 85% original blue finish on the barrel, 75% slightly muted original case colors, with light surface
freckling on the balance, and sharp markings and edges in the metal overall. Wood is also fine as re-oiled, with distinct edges, a repaired spliced
section at the upper right wrist, a small minor crack ahead of the buttplate tang, and defined cartouches. Mechanically excellent.

Exceptional Civil War U.S. Joslyn Model 1864 Breech Loading Saddle
Ring Carbine - Serial no. 14634, 52 RF cal., 22 inch round bbl., blue/casehardened
finish, walnut stock. Approximately 8,000 Model 1864 or “Second Model” carbines were
purchased by the U.S. Government on contract with the Joslyn Fire Arms Company.
They were among the more widely used and higher quality weapons issued to the
Union cavalry. It has the standard markings and features, including matching serial
numbers, “US” marked buttplate, two cartouches on the left of the wrist, and a small
anchor cartouche in front of the trigger guard.
CONDITION: Exceptionally fine, retains 85% plus original blue finish on the barrel
and 70% of the original vivid case colors on the lock plate assembly with the balance
mostly a smooth grey patina. The wood is excellent with some minor storage dings
and scratches and crisp cartouches. Mechanically excellent.
