Cased Pairs of Engraved and Gold Inlaid Durs Egg Flintlock Dueling
Pistols and Pocket Pistols -A) D. Egg Flintlock Dueling Pistol - NSN,
48 cal., 10 inch octagon bbl., brown/casehardened/blue finish, walnut
stock. This cased set was manufactured c. 1790-1800 and features a pair
of dueling pistols, a pair of boxlock pocket pistols, a leather wrapped
three-way combination flask, smaller “DIXON& SONS/SHEFFIELD” marked
three-way combination flask, two ball molds, rods, pair of screwdrivers,
oiler, balls, and flints. The inside of the case lid has a later Joseph Egg trade
label. The All four pistols feature gold escutcheons engraved with a clasped
hands over a heart and torse over the initials “WG”. Unfortunately, their
original owner’s identity is not known. The dueling pistols have browned
Damascus barrels with smooth bores, fixed silver blade front sights, three
sunken gold lined fleurs-de-lis at the breech along with the sunken gold
lined “D. EGG/LONDON” maker’s mark, a pair of gold inlaid bands at the
breech ends, gold touch hole liners, and dovetailed notch rear sights. The
standing breeches have floral engraving. The flat beveled locks are signed
“D. Egg” and have floral and martial engraving, frizzen spring rollers, sliding
half-cock safeties, and stepped tails. They are equipped with single set
triggers and engraved iron mounts. The walnut half-stocks have diamond
checkering with “+” accent marks. The pocket pistols are casehardened and
have smoothbore barrels with “44” marked on the breech faces. “1” and
“2” respectively are marked on the bottom of the barrels and the actions.
The boxlock actions are marked “LONDON” in ovals among the martial and
floral engraving on the right sides and “D. EGG” on the left sides. They are
equipped with sliding safeties and mounted with walnut grips.
CONDITION: Fine as restored with nearly all of the brown finish and distinct
twist patterns remaining on the barrel, bright gold, traces of original blue
on the mounts, mostly gray patina on the balance, distinct engraving and
markings, and minor wear. The stock is also fine and has crisp checkering,
mild scratches and dings, a crack at the toe, and some faint cracks. The
lock does not hold-full cock unless the trigger is
set first but otherwise functions. The case
and accessories are generally fine with
mild age and storage related wear,
including some cracks and
repairs on the case.
B) D. Egg Flintlock Dueling Pistol - NSN, 48 cal., 10 inch octagon bbl.,
brown/casehardened/blue finish, walnut stock. See “A.”
CONDITION: Fine as restored with nearly all of the brown finish and
distinct twist patterns remaining on the barrel, bright gold, 60% of the
original blue on the mounts, mostly gray patina on the balance, distinct
engraving and markings, and minor wear. The stock is also fine and has
crisp checkering, mild scratches and dings, small crack at the heel, and
tiny flakes. The lock does not release properly with the set trigger but
otherwise functions. C) D. Egg Flintlock Pocket Pistol - NSN, 45 cal., 2 1/4
inch round bbl., casehardened finish, walnut grips. See “A.”
CONDITION: Fine overall as restored with nearly all of the vibrant case
colors and nitre blue remaining, minor wear, crisp engraving and markings,
and minor marks on the grip. The barrel catch needs work, but the pistol
functions. D) D. Egg Flintlock Pocket Pistol - NSN, 45 cal., 2 1/4 inch
round bbl., casehardened finish, walnut grips. See “A.”
CONDITION: Fine overall as restored with nearly all of the vibrant case
colors and nitre blue remaining, minor wear, crisp engraving and
markings, and minor marks on the grip. The barrel catch needs
work, but the pistol functions. Overall, this is a very attractive
cased set from a well-regarded maker.
