Scarce Mauser Model 1878 Zig-Zag Single Action Revolving Carbine - Serial no. 35, 11 mm cal., 17 1/2 inch octagon bbl., blue finish, walnut stock. This very
scarce revolving carbine is based on the same mechanism as the 1878 “Zig Zag” revolver, with a reciprocating bar connected to the hammer engaging the namesake
track on the exterior of the cylinder to advance and index the chambers. Blade front and elevation adjustable rear sights on the “GEBR. MAUSER & CIE OBERNDORF
A/N. WURTTEMBERG” marked barrel, casehardened hammer, niter blue cylinder and controls, sling swivels, and a checkered straight wrist stock with a low profile
right handed cheekrest and a flat steel buttplate. In contrast to the revolver, the carbine uses a solid frame, with a niter blue locking lever for the cylinder on
the left side, a hinged loading gate that doubles as a mechanism to disconnect the cylinder from the bar so it can spin freely for loading and unloading, and a
freehand ejector rod slotted into the cylinder pin. A set of sling swivels are installed on the barrel and the checkered straight wrist stock, the latter also fitted
with a right handed cheekpiece and a smooth steel buttplate.
CONDITION: Fine, with 40% of the original blue finish on the frame, the barrel having turned a plum brown patina, and mild edge wear, spotting and handling
marks. Strong niter blue is present on the cylinder lock and traces on the partially refinished cylinder, with a silvered appearance to the casehardened
hammer and loading gate. The stock is also fine, slightly undersized with minor chips near the buttplate and minor scratches overall. Mechanically functions.
Provenance: The Collection of Clive Cussler.
Estimate: 16,000 - 25,000
