Scarce Newton Arms Co. Inc. First Model 1916
Bolt Action Rifle - Serial no. 3726, 30 Newton
cal., 24 inch round bbl., blue finish, walnut stock.
Manufactured circa 1916, this is one of just some 2,400 Model 1916 rifles manufactured by Newton
Arms Co. Inc. before folding and entering receivership in 1917. These Newton rifles are known as some of the finest sporting rifles ever
produced in the United States but were ill-fated due to World War I causing a lack of supplies to manufacture Newton’s specialty cartridges. The rifle has a blued
barrel with a beaded blade foresight and a two-leaf rear sight and is marked “NEWTON ARMS CO. INC./BUFFALO, N.Y.” on the top along with “30 NEWTON” on the
left and “PATENTS PENDING” at the breech. The barrel is fitted to the blued action with features a
checkered bolt knob, a folding rear peep sight affixed to the cocking piece, Newton modified safety,
and set triggers. The rifle is fitted in a nicely figured and multi-point checkered pistol grip stock with
Schnabel tip forend, blued steel grip cap, and horn buttplate.
CONDITION: Excellent, retaining 95% original blue finish with light handling evidence and some light
spotting. The stock has a small crack at the left of the action, some varnish wear, some insect damage
on the buttplate, and sharp checkering. Mechanically excellent.

Griffin & Howe Upgraded Pre-World War II Winchester Model 70 Bolt Action Rifle with Scope - Serial no. 12720,
220 Swift cal., 26 inch round bbl., blue finish,
walnut stock. Originally manufactured in
1937 and upgraded by Griffin & Howe in 1939
according to their records. The rifle has a blued barrel with a hooded ramped beaded blade front sight,
two folding leaf rear sight, original Winchester markings and “WP” proof, and “No. 1625 RE-BUILT by GRIFFIN &
HOWE INC. NEW YORK” signed on the top ahead of the rear sight. The barrel is fitted to the blued action which bears the Winchester “WP” proof and features
jewelling, a peep rear sight base with filler block, knurled bolt knob, and a Griffin & Howe scope mount holding a Weaver V9-1 3-9x scope. The rifle is fitted with an
elegant Griffin & Howe built beautifully figured and multi-point checkered pistol grip stock with horn forend tip, blued steel grip cap, a set of blue sling studs, a shadowline
cheekpiece, “E.B.M” in the silver inscription oval, and a checkered blued steel trapdoor buttplate containing
the rear peep sight elevator and peep. Includes a generic hard case and five 20-round boxes of .220 Swift
ammunition (100 rounds total, various manufacturers).
CONDITION: Exceptionally fine, retaining 99% blue finish with minor handling evidence and sharp checkering
on the stock. Mechanically excellent. The scope optics are clear and reticle is crisp.

Griffin & Hobbs Built Model 1903 Bolt Action Sporting Rifle with Scope - Serial no. 1011, 30-06 Springfield
cal., 24 inch round bbl., blue finish, walnut stock.
The makers have confirmed that this rifle was
manufactured in 1930. The rifle features a blued
barrel with banded ramp front sight, barrel band
with front sling swivel, and “No. 1011 GRIFFIN & HOBBS, INC. NEW YORK” engraved on the
top as well as the caliber “.30-06 GOV.” at the left of the chamber. After James Howe left the firm, James Hobbs joined
as partner and Griffin & Howe was renamed Griffin & Hobbs for a short time before merging with Abercrombie & Fitch and reverting to the original,
more well-known, name. The blued 1903 action has a matted front bridge, Lyman rear peep sight base (peep and elevator absent), jeweled bolt body and extractor,
bolt handle with checkered knob, and a Griffin & Howe scope mount holding a Lyman All-American 6x scope. The rifle is fitted in an attractively figured and multi-point checkered
elegantly shaped pistol grip stock with ebony forend tip, blued steel grip cap, shadowline cheekpiece, blank inscription oval, rear sling swivel, and a checkered and engraved blued
steel trapdoor buttplate. Famed American author Ernest Hemingway was known to favor a rifle very similar to this one and used his Griffin & Howe Springfield 1903 extensively from the
American West to East Africa including both his 1933 and 1953 safaris in Kenya.
CONDITION: Very fine, retaining 90% plus original blue finish, some light spotting mostly on the floorplate and light
handling evidence. The stock is very good with some dings and scratches, a significant chip at the rear upper tang, a crack
forming on the cheekpiece, and sharp checkering. Mechanically excellent. Scope optics clear, reticle is crisp.

Excellent Griffin & Howe Model 1903 Bolt Action Sporting Rifle with Zeiss Scope - Serial no. 847, 30-06 Springfield cal., 22 inch round
bbl., blue finish, walnut stock. Built in the late 1920s, this
rifle features a blued barrel with banded ramp front
sight, barrel band with front sling eye, and “No. 847
GRIFFIN & HOWE, INC. NEW YORK” engraved on the top as well as the caliber “.30-06 GOV.” at the
left of the chamber. The rifle is fitted to the blued 1903 action which has a matted front bridge, Lyman rear
peep sight, jeweled bolt body and extractor, swept back bolt handle with checkered knob, and a Griffin & Howe scope mount holding a Zeiss Zielklein
scope. The rifle is fitted in a nicely figured and multi-point checkered elegant pistol grip stock with ebony forend tip, blued steel grip cap, shadowline cheekpiece,
blank inscription oval, rear sling eye, and a checkered and engraved blued steel trapdoor buttplate. This rifle is in a very similar configuration to the rifle of famed American author
Ernest Hemingway, who used his Griffin & Howe Springfield 1903 extensively from the American West to East Africa including both his 1933 and 1953 safaris in Kenya.
CONDITION: Excellent, retaining 98% original blue finish with minor handling evidence and some minor patches of
dried grease. There is a tiny crack near the rear of the upper tang; otherwise, the stock is excellent with a few small
marks and sharp checkering. Mechanically excellent. Scope optics clear, reticle is crisp.
