Very Fine Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle in Desirable .45-70 W.C.F. - Serial no. 133186,
45-70 WCF cal., 26 inch octagon bbl., blue finish, walnut stock. Manufactured in 1904, this is very solid
example of Winchester’s venerable Model 1886, which was designed by the iconic American firearms designer John
Moses Browning. The Model 1886 was Browning’s first lever action design for Winchester and was their attempt to compete with the powerful
Marlin Model 1881. Prior to the release of the robust ‘86, Winchester did not have a repeater that was capable of handling the most powerful cartridges
of the time, such as the prolific .45-70 W.C.F., which had been adopted by the U.S. Government as early as 1873, and was widely available in the American West. With the release
of the 1886, there was finely a Winchester repeating rifle available on the frontier that was strong enough to chamber the .45-70, giving people in the West another rugged rifle chambered for a cartridge proven
to dispatch any dangers one might face in North America. While the Winchester Model 1873 may have been “the gun that won the west”, the Model 1886 was “the gun that unwaveringly maintained it”. This
example, like the majority of the standard configuration ‘86s, shows the honest wear of a working gun that likely spent time laid across a saddle in the West. The top barrel flat is marked with the standard two-line
address and the caliber marking at the breech. The upper tang is marked with the three-line model and trademark information, while the lower tang has the two-line patent dates and the serial number. It is fitted
with a German silver No. 21 “Sporting” blade front sight and a folding ladder rear sight. It is mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with a crescent buttplate.
CONDITION: Fine, retains 60% plus of the original blue finish and strong traces of the original case colors on the hammer and lever with the balance having thinned to mostly a smooth grey patina, primarily on edges and
handling areas, typical of a well-cared for working gun. There is a series of minor scratches on the bottom of the action, typical of being laid across a saddle. The wood is also fine with some scattered minor dings and scratches.
Mechanically excellent. This is a fine, honest example of the Winchester 1886, chambered in its most prolific caliber!
Estimate: 4,000 - 6,000
LOT 3034
Antique Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle in .38-56 W.C.F. - Serial no. 67900, 38-56
WCF cal., 26 inch octagon bbl., blue/casehardened finish, walnut stock. Manufactured in 1892, this is
a solid example of the John Browning designed Winchester Model 1886 chambered in .38-56 W.C.F. The .38-56
W.C.F. cartridge was introduced by Winchester in 1887 as an attempt to outperform Ballard/Marlin’s .38-55 cartridge, which had been
around since 1884. The cartridge saw some commercial attempt but generally failed in its goal to replace the .38-55, as it had essentially the
same ballistics while using slightly more powder. These Model 1886s chambered in .38-56 remained popular particularly in the American West for both varmint control
and hunting well into the 20th century. The top barrel flat on this example is marked with the standard two-line address and the caliber marking is at the breech. The model designation is marked on the
upper tang, while the two-line patent dates and serial number are on the lower tang. It is fitted with a German silver “Rocky Mountain” type blade front sight (lower half of sides covered in black enamel) and
an elevation adjustable No. 24 “Sporting” notch rear sight (vertical portion filed shorter). It is mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with a crescent buttplate.
CONDITION: Very good plus, retains 30% of the thinned original blue finish, faint traces of original case colors with the balance silvered, and 30% of the original nitre blue on the loading gate. The revarnished
wood is also very good with some scattered minor handling marks and a hairline crack at the rear of the upper tang. Mechanically excellent.
Estimate: 2,500 - 3,750

LOT 3035
Winchester Model 1892 Lever Action Rifle in Desirable 25-20 WCF Caliber - Serial no.
385757, 25-20 WCF cal., 24 inch octagon bbl., blue finish, walnut stock. This is a very fine example of a
Winchester Model 1892 lever action rifle that was manufactured in 1907 and chambered in the desirable 25-20
caliber, the lowest production caliber of all the 1892 rifles. The top of the barrel is marked with Winchester factory two line address and 1884
patent date ahead of the rear sight, followed by the Winchester “WP” oval proof behind the rear sight with “25-20 W.C.F.” in front of the receiver. The
Winchester oval proof is also marked on top of the receiver. The top tang has the standard second pattern, three line Winchester/Model 1892 markings with
the full serial number on the bottom of the receiver. It is fitted with a half/nickel sporting front sight with the adjustable buckhorn type rear sight. As noted it has the desirable full length octagon
barrel and magazine tube. It is fitted with a standard walnut stock with crescent buttplate and forearm.
CONDITION: Very fine with 70% plus of the original blue finish remaining with wear on the front underside end and upper rear left edge of the receiver and upper tang. The stock and forend are both fine with
most of the original factory varnish remaining overall with minor scratches and light pressure dents with the left side of the pistol grip area and underside of the forend both showing some minor finish loss
mixed with a darker color. The hammer and lever both retain 30% of their muted original case colors overall mostly in the protected areas. Mechanically excellent. A solid example of a Winchester Model 1892
lever action rifle in desirable 25-20 WCF caliber.
Estimate: 2,250 - 3,500
