The receiver has the very attractive
No. 9 pattern engraving which
shows a standing buck in a circular
scene on the left and a running
buck in a circular scene on the right,
both surrounded by floral scroll
and decorative border engraving.
There are additional light flourished
of scrollwork on the sides of the
takedown collar, forearm cap,
and on the tang of the buttplate.
The receiver, forearm cap, and
buttplate are all gold plates, while
the hammer, lever, trigger, and bolt
are nickel plated The top of the browned barrel is marked with the standard two-line address and
caliber marking at the breech. The upper tang is marked with the model, trademark, and patent
information, while the serial number is on the bottom of the receiver. The stock was not removable
to list the assembly number, but the inside of the buttplate is stamped “2472” twice (once partial
stamping) and the butt of the stock is also stamped “2472” in a different font. It is fitted with a
Marble beaded blade front sight and an elevation adjustable No. 26 “California” buckhorn rear
sight. It is mounted with a highly attractive, factory quality, H-pattern checkered, bird’s eye maple
forearm and pistol grip stock with a hard rubber grip cap and a Swiss pattern buttplate. The
ledgers do not list the rifle with either the Swiss buttplate or the bird’s eye wood, but the Swiss
buttplate was undoubtedly factory-made and the wood is of factory quality. It is possible that
both were installed during the repair and return date listed in the factory letter.
CONDITION: Very fine as a factory maintained and refurbished exhibition piece, retaining 85% of
the brown finish, 80% plus of the gold plating, and 95% of the nickel plating with some light wear
and handling evidence scattered throughout. The wood is also very fine with only the slightest
handling marks and crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent. An extraordinarily rarely configured,
possibly one-of-a-kind Winchester exhibition Model 1894 rifle!
