LOT 441
U.S. Springfield Armory M1C Semi-Automatic Sniper Rifle with Lyman Alaskan Scope - Serial
no. 3692220, 30-06 cal., 24 inch round bbl., parkerized finish, walnut stock. The first semi-automatic sniper
rifle adopted by the U.S., the M1C was an effective weapon but intricate in construction; one would need to take a receiver off
the line mid-production, ship it to Griffin & Howe of New York for scope rail installation, then return it to Springfield to be made into a complete rifle.
While in theory superseded by the more armorer-friendly M1D, the M1C served well as a primary sniper rifle in WWII, Korea and as late as Vietnam. The receiver
in this rifle was manufactured in April of 1945. Blade front and peep rear sights, “S-A-4-51” barrel, as well as a Springfield bolt, trigger components, and operating rod. The scope rail is secured to the side with three screws and two pins, subsequently serial numbered to match the rifle on the underside, with a Griffin & Howe patent marked ring assembly. The scope is blue finished, with Lyman Alaskan All-Weather markings, serial number “B4032”, rubber eyepiece and crosshair reticle. The smooth pistol grip stock is marked with a circled “P” on the wrist, with a “MRT/11-62” cheekpiece secured with lacing and a pair of brass screws; these screws are typically missing from Garand Snipers. Included with the rifle is a Hart M2 flash hider.
CONDITION: Very fine, with 90% of the arsenal refurbished parkerized finish, showing bright wear on the high edges and mild spotting and handling marks overall. The stock is very good, with some chipping on the edges of the darker colored forearm, and mild scuffs and dings overall. The cheekpiece shows wear and verdigris buildup appropriate to age. The scope shows mild wear and spotting on the body, with good optics and a solid reticle. Mechanically excellent.
Estimate: 4,500 - 7,000
