Extraordinary Factory Exhibition Quality Panel Scene Engraved Burgess Deluxe Slide Action Shotgun -
NSN, 10 gauge, 30 inch solid rib bbl., blue finish, walnut stock. The Burgess Gun Company was established in 1892 by Andrew Burgess, a very prolific gun designer in the
late 1890s. Burgess was credited as having numerous mechanical patents for various firearms used by several of the well known arms producers. These shotguns were manufactured only from 1892-1899 before the company and all the patents were purchased by the Winchester Repeating Arms Company. Total quantity is estimated at only a few thousand. Offered here is a factory engraved deluxe example with game scene panels and select grade walnut stock that will make a fine addition to the most advanced shotgun or firearms art collection.
The engraving is in the style of Master Engraver Conrad Ulrich who was active from 1875 to 1913 and was known for his English type scrollwork and multiple border motifs, two engraving patterns featured on this shotgun. The
left side of the receiver has a beautifully engraved marsh scene depicting three ducks. A second well-executed, finely detailed game scene is engraved on the right side
of the receiver, which depicts two setters flushing out a woodcock. These two panel scenes are further decorated with fine scrollwork and borders. The scrollwork on the front sides of the receiver surround a small flying duck. The scrollwork extends to the trigger guard and bolt. The bolt is also hand engraved “BURGESS GUN CO./BUFFALO N.Y., U.S.A.”The engraving certainly gives the impression that this shotgun was possibly a factory exhibition piece! The
