around the country. They feature the same lock as the Model 1847 Musketoon. It has a small bayonet stud on the bottom of the barrel near the muzzle, a blade front sight on the front of the upper barrel band, long range ladder rear sight, and “1853” dated lock. “B4” marked on top of the rear barrel band, “20” marked on the underside of the stock ahead of the trigger guard, “US” and “B/65” marked on top of the buttplate. Includes a “US” socket bayonet. CONDITION: Good, exhibiting a mix of bright surfaces and scattered light surface corrosion on the barrel and fittings, some areas of light pitting, and smooth gray/brown patina on the lock. Stock is also good as period arsenal sanded and re-oiled, with scattered scratches and dents, and a few chips. Mechanically excellent. Included bayonet is also good with scattered moderate pitting. LOT 242 U.S. Harpers Ferry Model 1841 Percussion “Mississippi Rifle” with Long Range Sight and Saber Bayonet Stud - NSN, 54 cal., 33 inch round bbl., brown/ casehardened finish, walnut stock. Harpers Ferry Model 1841 rifle with arsenal alterations performed circa 1855 including a long range rear sight and saber bayonet lug. “HARPERS/FERRY/1849” marked vertically in three lines on the tail of the lock and an eagle and shield above “US” at the center. “1849” dated barrel tang. The left of the barrel is marked “AW/P” perpendicular to the bore followed by the usual arsenal “V/P” and eagle head proof and inspection marks stamped parallel to the bore. “W.C.K” marked upside down on the right barrel flat at the breech. “W.C.K” and “JLR” marked on the left stock flat. Many of these rifles were rebored to .58 caliber, but this example is still in its original .54 caliber with a seven groove rifled barrel. These rifles saw extensive service during the first several years of the Civil War in both the Union and Confederate Armies. Includes extra nipple and tool in patch box. CONDITION: Good, exhibiting a mix of smooth gray and brown patina with mostly clear markings and edges in the metal overall. Stock is very good as period arsenal sanded and re-oiled, with scattered scratches and dents. Estimate: 2,500 - 3,750

Historic Major Dix at the Battle of Buena Vista Oil on Canvas By Edward L. Custer - Scarce most dramatic Mexican-American War Battle scene of Major Dix at the Battle of Buena Vista original oil painting by Edward Custer (Am 1837-1881). The most crucial battle of the Mexican-American War. On Feb 23, 1847 after refusing to surrender Major Zachery Taylor’s army of 5,000 repelled the 20,000 forces of General Santa Anna. Major Roger Sherman Dix (1810-1849) is bearing the colors of the 2nd Indiana Volunteers and rallying his men to fight onward to a glorious victory. The oil painting shows the battle in progress with gun smoke emanating in the center of the battle, swords drawn, foes laying on the ground as American forces gain momentum to over run the Mexican army. Dramatic action on both sides of this battle. The painting is signed in verso “Edward L Custer”. Americana at it’s highest form with strong provenance of ownership. The painting was bought by the consignor in New Orleans, LA estate sale 9/30/06 after being held by original owner from inception of painting, sold to Senator Charles Ford, OK Senator 2007-2022, and repurchased from estate of Senator Ford 2022 by the consignor. Includes consignor research and sale invoice from 2006. CONDITION: Very fine with vibrant colors. The frame is silver painted with some fading and a few moderate crack at the bottom on the frame. Provenance: Senator Charles Reed Ford.
