 smoothbore, the left barrel 15 bore rifled. With browned Damascus bolstered barrels with raised flat rib fitted with blued rear sight of three folding leaves and signed “MORTIMER, FLEET ST. LONDON” towards the breech end. The underside of the barrels struck with London proof marks. Casehardened patent breeches each with platinum plug. Border and scroll engraved standing breech and side locks, the latter each signed “MORTIMER”, the left lock with detent. Blued furniture including trigger guard with checkered pistol grip. Well figured straight hand walnut half stock with checkered grip, the underside of the butt with blank silver oval initial
escutcheon. Original brass mounted ramrod. In original brass cornered fitted mahogany case lined in dark blue velvet, with some accessories including a brown leather shot flask.
CONDITION: Very fine with 60% of the browned finish remaining with some areas of discoloration and spotting and clear barrel markings. The breech, hammer, locks and other casehardened components retain approximately 30% of their original finish. The trigger guard and butt plate retain 60% of their original blue finish with some areas of discoloration, mostly on the butt plate. The refinished wood is very good with numerous scratches and dings, well defined checkering, and some slight chipping of the edges. The case is very fine with several scratches on the exterior, including one running nearly the entire length of the top, a large crack coming off one of the corners, and some slight tears and staining to the interior. Mechanically excellent.

Fine Engraved Joseph Harkom & Son, Edinburgh 8 Bore Double Barrel Percussion Duck Shotgun - Serial no. 1691, 8 Bore gauge, 34 1/4 inch bbl., browned/casehardened/blued finish, walnut stock. This late production big bore percussion duck gun was manufactured in circa 1873/4. With browned Damascus barrels signed “JOSPEH HARKOM & SON. 32 PRINCES STREET EDINBURGH” on the concave rib. Border and scroll engraved casehardened standing breech and locks, the latter each signed “HARKOM & SON”, with dolphin carved hammers, and blued trigger guard. Well figured walnut half stock with checkered grip and forearm, the underside of the butt with blank oval initial escutcheon. CONDITION: Barrels retaining 95% rebrowned finish, good Damascus pattern, clear signature. Breeches a dark patina, clear engraved decoration. Standing breech and locks retaining 40% faded original casehardened finish, trigger guard with 20% original blued finish
mostly to inner surface. Stock lightly refinished with minor handling marks, and sharp recut checkering. Butt plate with mostly a grey patina. Mechanically excellent.

engraved with a narrow band of stylized running foliage and fitted with a pierced platinum plug, the rib section engraved with scrollwork and inlaid with two gold lines. The underside of the barrels marked “STUB DAMASCUS” and with Birmingham proof marks, stamped “H. HART GUN MAKER BIRMINGHAM” and most unusually with powder and shot load data. This data reads between the two
barrels as follows “Excellent shooting qualities with Drams of powder & ounce of shots”, these marks go on to list powder/shot charges beginning with 2 1/2 drams of powder with 1 ounce of hot through to 3 1/2 drams of powder with 1 1/4 ounces of shot. Casehardened grooved standing breech, bar-in-wood side locks and furniture including trigger plate with large pineapple finial all with fine border
and scroll engraving. The locks are each signed “THORNTON & SONS”. Well-figured walnut straight hand half-length stock with checkered grip and forearm, the wrist inset with a blank silver shield shaped initial
escutcheon. Brass mounted ramrod with worm. In brass bound fitted mahogany case lined in green baize with some accessories, including Hawksley powder flask, a leather shot flask, an Eley Bros. cap tin and a key for the case. CONDITION: Very fine. The barrels retain 97% strong original browned finish with crisp signature. The breeches, standing breech and locks retain 90% plus original casehardened finish with fading on the right lock. The furniture
retains 40-50% original casehardened finish; the finish is stronger on the trigger plate and buttplate. The engraving remains crisp throughout. There is a patch of pitting on the trigger guard bow. Stock has an attractive figure and remains in excellent condition with the occasional scattered age related storage and handling blemish. Checkering is well-defined. Mechanically excellent. The case exterior is very good and has some and storage related wear, including some cracks. The case interior has been renovated and is in excellent condition.
