Master Rocco Capece Signed, Engraved, and Raised Relief Gold Inlaid Connecticut Shotgun Manufacturing Co. 28 Gauge RBL
Reserve Double Barrel Shotgun - Serial no. RBL006021, 28 gauge, 30 inch solid rib bbl., blue/casehardened/gold finish, walnut stock. Blued steel barrels with a single bead sight on the smooth concave solid rib with is marked “RESERVE” with a small scroll flourish at the
breech, standard C.S.M.C. markings, 2 3/4 inch chambers with ejectors, and chokes measured improved modified/full. The casehardened
self-opening boxlock action displays extensive gold inlay consisting of raised linework in geometric and scrolling patterns along with a
number of finely detailed raised relief inlaid quail scenes. The fences both show the busts of quail with a common quail on the left and a Bob White on the right, another Bob White quail on the top lever, the
left of the action shows a trio of scaled quail amongst the scrub brush, the underside shows four mountain quail in a field scene, the right has a
trio of Gambel’s quail in a field, and the pierced trigger guard displays a
set of Bob White quail. The scenes show strong dimensionality
giving them the appearance of jumping off the steel. The
trigger plate is signed “CAPECE” for Master Engraver Rocco
Capece who has carried out the engraving and inlays on this
piece. The gun features a single selective gold trigger and a
tang mounted automatic safety switch with gold inlaid “S”.
Beautifully figured, multi-point checkered beavertail forend
with engraved and gold inlaid show and straight wrist stock
with serrated buttplate. Barrel and stock measurements (R/L):
bore diameter nine inches from the breech .548/.549 inches; choke
constriction .017/.031 inches; 1 7/16 inch drop at comb; 2 1/4 inch drop at heel; 14 11/6 inch length of pull; weight 6 lbs. 1 oz.
CONDITION: Very fine overall, retaining 99% blue, casehardened and gold finishes with minor handling evidence, a few areas of light oxidation towards the muzzles, a few dents on the left of the wrist, and sharp checkering on the stock and forend. Mechanically excellent.
