Incredibly Rare British James II Era Late 17th Century John Bunday Flintlock Cavalry Carbine - NSN, 67 cal., 31 1/2 inch part octagon bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. This carbine was manufactured during the short and tumultuous reign of James II of England (1685-1688) and has his “J2R” cipher at the center of the “banana” profile lock and on top of the barrel at
the breech. James II (James VII in Scotland) was the last Catholic monarch of England, Scotland, and Ireland and was removed from power in the famous “Glorious Revolution of 1688” (or
Bloodless Revolution). Martial carbines from the era in general were limited. Some of these carbines are believed to have been used in the North American colonies. It has a smoothbore, three-stage barrel, rounded blade front sight, “BVNDAY” marked at the tail of the lock for London gunmaker John Bunday (active between 1678-1711), “IB” (John Bunday) and a fleur-de-lis mark on the left quarter of the breech, a nine inch iron sling bar mounted on the left of the full length stock with “SM/53” in two lines stamped on the underbelly and “29” stamped on the left of the buttstock, iron trigger guard and cast brass ramrod ferrules, blank wrist escutcheon and buttplate (very early for using cast brass). CONDITION: Very good with mostly bright iron surfaces as lightly polished, some areas of light pitting, and varied aged patina on the brass. Stock is good as sanded and re-oiled, with moderate dings and scratches, various spliced and repaired sections, and re-glued cracks on either side above the trigger. Mechanically excellent. Because of his short rule, all firearms with James II’s cipher are considered incredibly rare, and are extremely difficult to acquire. The ties to the last crowned English, Scottish, and Irish Catholic monarch certainly adds to this carbine’s interest. Provenance: The Collection of Joe M. Wanenmacher Jr.
