LOT 1354 Dagger with Polish Royalty Themed Relief Carved Decoration - Measuring 18 1/2 inches overall, with a 12 1/2 inch double edged spear point blade. The hilt is constructed from carved bone or antique ivory, with a crowned double-headed eagle pommel, brass studded red velvet wrapped grip, and a 4 1/2 inch wide crossguard with harpy quillions, a bust of a man’s head on one side and the name “STEPH/BATORI”. This likely indicates Stephen Bathory, Prince of Transylvania and King of Poland from 1576 to 1586. The scabbard is constructed similarly to the hilt, with a red velvet covering of the back face and the obverse covered with elaborate carving, featuring a lion and gryphons at the throat, a Polish coat of arms, a nest of snakes, a harpy, and a toothed serpent fighting a cockatrice at the tip. CONDITION: Very good. The blade shows a mixed gray patina, with areas of oxidization and shallow pitting. The velvet shows mild wear and staining, concentrated on the grip, with a fresher appearance to the back of the sheath. The furniture is fine, with a number of age cracks and minor chips, showing attractive aged color and sharp detail in the carving. Provenance: The Dr. Gerald Klaz Collection. Estimate: 3,000 - 5,000
LOT 1355 Dagger with Elaborate Polish Royalty Themed Carving - Measuring 17 inches overall, the dagger is fit with an 11 inch trefoil blade with a spear point and faint etching. CONDITION: Very good. The blade has been cleaned, with patches of oxidization and shallow pitting. LOT 1356 Dagger with Elaborate Polish/Royal Themed Carved Furniture - Measuring 15 5/8 inches overall, with a 10 1/2 inch spear point blade with a diamond cross section. The sheath is of similar construction, prominently featuring the unlabeled busts of four kings. While not positively identified, one is wearing what appears to be the “Muscovy Crown” of Ladislaus IV Vasa, King of Poland from 1632- 1648 and elected Tsar of Russia in 1610. CONDITION: Good. The blade is fair and shows a mixed gray and brown patina, with edge nicks and scattered spotting. The guard has been broken and repaired and the sheath shows age cracks, otherwise the furniture is in very good condition, with minor chipping, handling marks, and strong detail.
