LOT 1514
Outstanding Savage Model 1917 Semi-
Automatic Pistol with Attractive Pearl Grips
and Scarce Factory Box - Serial no. 250526,
32 ACP cal., 3 3/4 inch round bbl., blue finish,
pearl grips. Manufactured in 1920-1928, this is
an outstanding and slightly unique example of
a Savage Model 1917 pistol. It has the standard two-line address, patent date, and caliber marking on top of the slide, and the left of the frame is marked “SAVAGE 1917 MODEL”. It is fitted with standard blade and notch sights, and a pair of smooth pearl grips with Savage logo medallions. These grips are somewhat interesting considering they were intended for the Savage Model 1907 but have been professionally fitted to this pistol. This pistol is pictured and described on p. 119 of “Savage Pistols” by Bailey Brower Jr., where the interesting grips are described as being installed very well but unclear if done by the factory or aftermarket. Includes a factory box correctly labeled to the model of gun.
CONDITION: Excellent, retains 99% plus of the original blue finish and vibrant original case colors on the trigger with only the slightest edge wear. The grips are very fine with a barely noticeable vertical hairline age crack in the rear edge of the right panel, and otherwise only the slightest handling marks. Mechanically excellent. The box is fine with some mild handling/storage wear.
Provenance: The Bailey Brower, Jr. Collection, author of “Savage Pistols”.
