AS PICTURED AND DESCRIBED IN THE BOOKS WINCHESTER ENGRAVING & THE BOOK OF WINCHESTER ENGRAVING BY WILSON AND THE HENRY RIFLE BY QUICK
LOT 1008
Attractive Documented Samuel Hoggson Factory Engraved New Haven Arms Co. Henry Lever Action Rifle - Serial no. 6055, 44 Henry cal., 24 1/4 inch octagon bbl., blue/gold finish, deluxe walnut stock. Factory engraved Henry rifles are scarce and highly sought after by collectors, and this stunning rifle is certainly no exception. It is featured on page 22 of “The Book of Winchester Engraving” and page 29 of “Winchester Engraving,” both by R.L. Wilson as well as on pages 156 and 157 of “The Story of Benjamin Tyler Henry and His Famed Repeating Rifle” by Les Quick. Looking at the rifle it is very easy to see why it was featured in those books. It is a beautiful work of firearms art. The engraving is very similar to those on other Henry rifles of the period and mainly consists of scrollwork, decorative borders, floral blooms on
the front panels, and a buck on the left side plate. The rifle was manufactured in 1864 and
is equipped with a German silver blade front sight and notch and ladder rear sight with 900
yard top notch. The two-line address and patent marking is marked ahead of the rear sight,
and the serial number is marked on top at the breech. The Oliver Winchester “W” inspection
is stamped on the lower tang.
CONDITION: Fine. The barrel has 30% plus of the original blue finish remaining with smooth
gray and brown patina on the balance, some lateral filing/polishing lines, and distinct
address and serial number. The frame and buttplate have bight original gold in the
backgrounds and otherwise a very attractive aged patina overall.
The engraving remains crisp. The hammer, lever, and trigger are
mostly silver gray patina. The sanded and refinished stock is also
fine and has beautiful figure, a few scattered minor dings and
dents, and mostly only minimal handling and storage marks.
Mechanically excellent. This is a stunning Henry lever action rifle
with factory classic engraving and a beautifully figured stock.
