Civil War U.S. Whitney Model 1861 “Plymouth” Navy Percussion Rifle with Saber Bayonet - Serial no. 5184, 69 cal., 34 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. Manufactured under a July of 1861 contract, with delivery of 10,000 rifles completed in 1864. The Plymouth Rifle was manufactured on the recommendation of Navy ordnance officer
John A. Dahlgren and was based on the French Model 1849 “Chasseurs de Vincennes” percussion rifle. It features a .69 caliber rifled barrel with bayonet lug on the right, long range rear ladder sight graduated to 1,000 yards, trigger guard with spur finger grip and ramrod with large cylindrical tip pierced with a small hole. “1863” dated lock and barrel. Serial number “5184” marked on the barrel tang. “V/P/eagle head” proofs marked on the upper left barrel flat. The lock is decorated with a large eagle and shield motif ahead of the hammer and “U.S./WHITNEY-VILLE” in two lines. “F.C.W” (Frank C. Warner) inspection initials marked on the left barrel flat, and a bordered script “FCW” inspection cartouche stamped on the left stock flat. “US” marked buttplate tang. The included saber bayonet has a 22 1/2 inch polished
steel blade with spear point. The brass hilt has cast-ribbed grips and a bird’s head pommel with serial number “8611” marked on the flat of the hilt. The reverse ricasso is stamped “COLLINS & CO” in an arch above “HARTFORD/CONN.” CONDITION: Fine with scattered areas of moderate freckling, and distinct markings and edges in the metal overall. Stock is also fine showing the original oil finished walnut with raised feathered grains, a few scattered pressure dents, chips and scratches, and defined edges overall with a crisp cartouche. Mechanically excellent. Included saber bayonet is very good. Estimate: 2,250 - 3,500
Includes a U.S. socket bayonet. CONDITION: Exceptionally fine, retains bright surfaces with some very light freckling, and sharp markings and edges in the metal overall. Stock is very fine with attractive original raised grain and rich oil finish, and some light handling marks and dents. Mechanically excellent. Included bayonet is very good.

Scarce U.S. Springfield Model 1851 Cadet Percussion Rifled Musket with Long Range Sights and Bayonet - NSN, 57 cal., 40 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. Springfield Armory manufactured a total of 4,000 cadet muskets c. 1852-1853 for use by various cadet schools around the country. They feature the same lock as the Model 1847 Musketoon. It has a small bayonet stud on the bottom of the barrel near the muzzle, a blade front sight on the front of the upper barrel band, long range ladder rear sight, “1853” dated lock and barrel tang. “US” and “B/31” marked on top of the buttplate. Includes a “US” socket bayonet. CONDITION: Very good with bright polished surfaces, some very light pin-prick pitting, and defined lock markings. Stock is also very good as re-oiled, with numerous scattered light scratches and dents, and defined edges. Mechanically excellent. Included bayonet is very good. Estimate: 2,250 - 3,500
LOT 3236 New Jersey Alteration Whitney U.S. Model 1841 Percussion “Mississippi Rifle” with Bayonet - NSN, 54 cal., 33 inch round bbl., brown/casehardened finish, walnut stock. The state of New Jersey altered a small amount of Model 1841 rifles around 1859 for use with an angular socket bayonet; identified by their reduced muzzle diameter with a bayonet stud mounted on the underside in combination with a removed front sight blade, intended for use with a socket bayonet with a built in sight blade. “1851” dated lock and barrel tang. “U.S./S.K/VP” marked at the breech with “N.J” and “STEEL” on the left flat. “U.S.” and “42” marked buttplate tang. The patch box contains an extra nipple and combination tool. Includes a “U.S.” socket bayonet. The front sling swivel is broken off, but
included separately. Information on New Jersey alteration Remington Model 1841 rifles can be found on pages 169-170 of George D. Moller’s book “American Military Shoulder Arms Volume III”. CONDITION: Fine, retains 70% arsenal refurbished brown finish on the barrel with the lock turned to a mix of smooth brown and gray patina with some patches of light pitting, and sharp markings and edges in the metal. Brass exhibits a pleasing golden aged patina. Stock is very good as arsenal sanded and re-oiled, with some scattered light to moderate dents and chips. Mechanically excellent.

Exceptional Civil War Hewes & Phillips Bolster Conversion U.S. Springfield Model 1816 Rifled Musket with Bayonet - NSN, 69 cal., 42 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. This U.S. Springfield Model 1816 musket has a bolster conversion performed by Hewes & Phillips of Newark, New Jersey, and features their distinctive percussion breech with integral “H&P” marked bolster, “1862” dated plug, and “1826” dated lock.
