Exceptional U.S. Civil War American Machine Works Smith Breech Loading Percussion Saddle Ring Carbine - Serial no. 3313, 50 cal., 21 5/8 inch part octagon bbl., blue/casehardened finish, walnut stock. Reportedly 30,362 Smith carbines were purchased by the U.S. Government throughout the Civil War. Some of these carbines were issued to the 3rd West Virginia Cavalry, who served as part of George Armstrong Custer’s 3rd Division and played a pivotal role in the Battle of Moorefield in 1864. Blade front and ladder rear sights. A sling bar and ring are mounted on the left of the receiver. Small “GP” inspection initials marked stock and “B” on various components to include left side of barrel and stock comb. CONDITION: Excellent, retains 90% original blue finish on the barrel, 85% original case colors on the frame, 80% plus original bright nitre blue finish strongest on the breech latch, stock junction and lower tang with some areas of flaking and smooth brown patina on the balance, and scattered brown freckling overall. Sharp markings and edges in the metal overall. Wood is very fine with attractive original raised grains, a chip on the right of the wrist, a few minor chips at the toe, and defined edges. Mechanically excellent. This exceptional example of an American Machine Works Smith carbine would make a fine addition to any Civil War or U.S. martial collection! Estimate: 3,500 - 5,000

Fine Civil War U.S. Massachusetts Arms Co. Second Model Maynard Breech Loading Percussion Saddle Ring Carbine - Serial no. 10257, 50 cal., 20 inch part octagon bbl., blue/casehardened finish, walnut stock. Approximately 20,202 second model Maynard carbines were manufactured between 1863-1865. Some were issued to the 6th, 9th, and 11th Indiana Cavalry as well as the 10th and 11th East Tennessee Union Cavalry. Pinched blade front sight, three leaf rear sight, “J.M” inspection initials on the left barrel flat at the breech, and two boxed script inspection cartouches stamped on the left of the wrist.
CONDITION: Fine, retains 60% plus original blue finish with smooth brown patina on the balance, 40% original case colors, scattered light freckling and some patches of light pitting, and sharp markings and edges in the metal. Stock is very fine, with some scattered scratches and dents, some darkened areas of stain at the edges, and crisp cartouches. Mechanically excellent. Estimate: 2,250 - 3,500

Second Model Maynard Breech Loading Percussion Saddle Ring Carbine - Serial no. 21433, 50 cal., 20 inch part octagon bbl., blue/casehardened finish, walnut stock. Approximately 20,202 second model Maynard carbines were manufactured between 1863-1865. Some were issued to the 6th, 9th, and 11th Indiana Cavalry as well as the 10th and 11th East Tennessee Union Cavalry. Pinched blade front sight, three leaf rear sight, “S” single letter inspection initial on the left
barrel flat at the breech, and two boxed script inspection cartouches stamped on the left of the wrist. CONDITION: Very good, retains 40% of the faded original blue finish with extensive scattered moderate pin-prick pitting and brown patina on the balance, a mix of gray and brown patina on the frame, and clear markings and edges in the metal. Stock is fine with raised feathered grain, some scattered scratches and dings, a steak of yellow paint under the buttstock, and crisp cartouches. Mechanically excellent. Estimate: 1,600 - 2,500
        Civil War Starr Arms Breech Loading Percussion Saddle Ring Carbine -
Serial no. 12832, 54 cal., 21 inch round bbl., blue/casehardened finish, walnut stock. Starr Arms Co. manufactured approximately 20,601 of these carbines during the Civil War. Features standard blade front and two-leaf rear sights, sling ring mounted on the left of the receiver, inspection initials “F.D.L” on the left of the breech and on top of the stock ahead of the buttplate tang, and faint remnants of a boxed script inspection cartouche stamped on the left wrist of the stock. “12832” marked on the left of the breech block and underneath the barrel. Large initials “L.H” period carved in the left of the buttstock. CONDITION: Very good, exhibiting mostly smooth silver gray patina with areas of smooth brown patina, scattered light pitting, strong traces of original blue finish concentrated on and around the rear sight. Wood is also very good as re-oiled, with scattered dents and scratches, some minor chips, and carving as mentioned above. Mechanically excellent. Estimate: 2,000 - 3,000

Civil War Richardson & Overman Gallager Breech Loading Percussion Saddle Ring Carbine - Serial no. 22316, 50 cal., 22 1/4 inch round bbl., blue/casehardened finish, walnut stock. The Gallager carbine was designed by Dr. Mahlon J. Gallager, a Southerner by birth, and manufactured under license by Richardson & Overman in Philadelphia where Gallager had a dental practice. Reportedly 17,728 Gallager carbines were manufactured in three different variations. It has a notch and folding leaf rear sight, blued barrel and casehardened frame, lock plate marked “GALLAGER’S PATENT/JULY 17Th 1860” and “MANUFACTd BY/ RICHARDSON & OVERMAN,/PHILADA.” above the serial number, smooth walnut stock with patch box, saddle bar and ring. Includes a reloadable metallic cartridge. CONDITION: Very good, retains strong traces of original blue finish underneath scattered heavy brown surface patina on the barrel, with smooth gray and brown patina on the casehardened surfaces with traces of case colors visible in protected areas. Stock is also very good as lightly sanded and re-oiled, with some light dents and handling marks. Mechanically excellent. Estimate: 1,800 - 2,750
