Outstanding Exhibition/Presentation Quality Factory Engraved Remington Model No. 1
Rolling Block Single Shot Rifle with Shipping Crate - Serial
no. 2807, 40-70 Sharps cal., 30 inch octagon bbl., blue/casehardened finish,
walnut stock. Blued octagon barrel with two position (standard blade and hooded post) flip-up front sight, military style notch and ladder combination rear sight, “E. REMINGTON & SONS, ILION, N. Y.” marked on the top flat, and wedges of floral scroll
engraving to the left, right, front of the rear sight and in front of and behind the front sight, and under the matching number forend is the full matching serial number “2807” followed by “E.S.”/”S.T.” The
casehardened action displays near full coverage exhibition quality deluxe broad leafy scroll factory engraving extending to the triggerguard, tangs,
block, and hammer. Unique hand engraved patent dates on the upper tang.
Nicely figured, smooth forend with engraved and casehardened tip and straight
wrist stock with engraved steel buttplate. Includes copies of correspondence resulting in this rifle being featured in the July, 1949 issue of “Outdoor Life” including the information that it was found still in its original packing crate after nearly 60 years in the basement of the heirs of the original owner after never being opened. Also includes the aforementioned
crate which is addressed to the original buyer, a General Batchelder of Saratoga, NY per the above article, has now faded. CONDITION: Excellent, retaining 98% original blue and 95% darkened original case colors with some light spotting on the top of the barrel, a few small dings and scratches in the excellent wood, and light handling evidence. The crate is very good. Mechanically needs work as the trigger does not engage the hammer. Estimate: 8,500 - 13,000

Relief Engraved Spanish Rolling Block Carbine with Silver Inlaid Presentation Inscription to the Governor of Oviedo - NSN, 43 cal., 23 1/8 inch round bbl., blue/casehardened/silver finish, walnut stock. The Spanish arms factory in Oviedo was licensed by Remington to produce rolling block rifles and carbines for the Spanish military in the 1870s. The barrel has a “barley corn” front sight and
is silver inlaid with “D. FERMIN VILLAMIL/GOBERNADOR DE LA PROV. DE OVIEDO/ANO DE 1873.” The frame has
scroll engraving with textured backgrounds on
nearly all of the surfaces and features a saddle ring bar with two rings on the left. The forend has a floral carved tip, and both the stock and
forend have checkering and sling swivels. Fermin Villamil (1820-1895) was a Spanish lawyer, military officer and civil governor of Oviedo and La Coruna during the short lived First Spanish Republic in 1873-1874 following the abdication of King Amadeo I during the Ten Years War and Third Carlist War.
CONDITION: Fine with crisp engraving, aged patina on the silver inlaid inscription, mottled dark
brown patina overall, and generally mild age and storage related wear. The wood is also fine and has crisp checkering, mild
scratches and dings, and distinct carving. Mechanically excellent. A fine and rare Spanish presentation inlaid and engraved rolling block carbine from the short lived First Republic. Estimate: 3,000 - 4,500
