Superb First Generation Colt Frontier
Six Shooter Single Action Army Revolver
with Original Box and Sales Receipt - Serial
no. 355934, 44-40 WCF cal., 5 1/2 inch round
bbl., blue/casehardened finish, hard rubber grips.
The Colt Single Action Army in .44-40 was named
the “Frontier Six Shooter” after J.P. Moore’s Sons
ordered some in 1878. Single actions in .44-40 were
particularly desirable in the West because they could
use the same ammunition as the popular Winchester
Model 1873 rifles and carbines. Since then .44-40 WCF
SAA has found a special place in the hearts of Peacemaker
collectors. Offered is a nearly impossibly to improve upon example
of the classic pre-World War II Colt with original box. The revolver was manufactured
in 1937 and is in near new condition. The barrel is stamped with the one-line Hartford address on top and “COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER .44-40” on the left side. The frame has
the standard two-line patent dates followed by a Rampant Colt. The left side of the trigger guard is stamped with the number “4” along with the Colt factory “VP” triangle proof. The full matching serial number appears on the frame, trigger guard, back strap and both grip panels. The matching last two digits of the serial number (“34”) are stamped on the rear cylinder face. Matching assembly number “638” is found on the loading gate and rear of the frame. The original factory box is numbered to the gun and has a correct end label. The accompanying sales receipt from Far West Hobby Shop of San Francisco, California, indicates the revolver, which is listed by serial number, sold for $39.40 on August 7, 1941.
CONDITION: Excellent plus, near new in box
overall, retaining over 99% original blue and vivid casehardened finishes showing very faint traces of a cylinder drag line, very minimal handling marks, and crisp grip checkering. Mechanically excellent. The box is very fine with some minor wear and retaining nearly all of the end label. A highly attractive, high condition example of the iconic Frontier Six Shooter SAA with original box that will be nearly impossible to improve upon.
