Very Fine Indian Wars Era U.S. Sharps New Model 1859 Metallic Cartridge Conversion Saddle Ring Carbine - Serial no. 61483, 50-70 U.S. Govt cal., 22 inch round bbl., blue/casehardened finish, walnut stock. This Sharps was originally manufactured in 1863-1865 as a percussion carbine for use in the Civil War and was one of 31,098 carbines returned by the U.S. Government to Sharps Rifle Manufacturing Co. in 1867, who received a contract for refurbishment and alteration of their rifles for use with metallic cartridges. This example features a sleeved barrel with three-groove rifling done at the time of alteration. Script “DFC” (David F. Clark) ribbon inspection
cartouche marked on the left center of the buttstock and absent primer feed mechanism (does not affect function of the gun), as typical on these metallic cartridge conversion carbines. It has a brass blade front sight, Lawrence patent notch/folding ladder rear sight, standard New Model 1859 receiver
markings, saddle ring and bar, smooth walnut forearm and stock with patch box. CONDITION: Very fine, retains 95% arsenal refurbished blue finish on the barrel with some scattered light surface freckling, 60% plus vivid
arsenal refurbished case colors with smooth gray patina and freckling on the balance, and scattered patches of light pitting. Wood is also
very fine, with defined edges, some light scratches and handling marks, and a crisp cartouche. Mechanically excellent. Estimate: 3,000 - 4,500
CONDITION: Fine, retains 60% original blue finish thinning to a smooth brown patina with a few small patches of light surface corrosion, 70% original case colors, 75% original niter blue finish, and sharp markings in the metal overall. The wood is very fine with attractive original raised grain, some scattered scratches and dents, and a crisp cartouche. Mechanically excellent. Estimate: 2,500 - 3,750
LOT 1201 Excellent Providence Tool Co. Peabody Saddle Ring Carbine - NSN, 50 RF cal., 20 inch round bbl., blue/casehardened finish, walnut stock. This Peabody carbine was
manufactured by the Providence Tool Company in 1866-1871. The barrel is fitted with a notch and folding leaf rear sight and a front sight blade mounted on a bayonet stud base. A saddle ring and staple
are located on the left side of the receiver as are the “PEABODY’S PAT./JULY 22, 1862/MAN’F’D BY/PROVIDENCE TOOL CO./PROV. R.I.” markings. The Providence Tool Co. inspection mark for foreign contract arms, “W.C.,” is
stamped on the left stock wrist. CONDITION: Excellent with 97% plus original blue and vivid casehardened finish and only minor wear concentrated at the muzzle. The lightly reoiled wood is very fine with scattered dings and scrapes on the left side of the buttstock. Mechanically excellent. Estimate: 2,250 - 3,250

Smith carbines were considered to be one of the most important Federal Cavalry carbines and were known to be accurate and reliable weapons. Standard three sets of markings on the left side of the frame. Matching serial number on the receiver and barrel. Dovetail blade front sight and folding leaf rear sight correctly absent of yard markings. Mounted with a smooth walnut forend and straight grip stock marked with an oval script “JH” cartouche on the left of the wrist.
