CONDITION: Very good. The rifle retains traces of the original blue, casehardened and nickel-
plated finish. The barrel and magazine have a dark patina with blue finish in protected areas. There
are traces of pitting on the bottom of the magazine and sides of the barrel. The forearm cap, side plates,
hammer and trigger retain 75% of the original nickel-plated finish. The tip of the forearm and the contact points
on the lever and hammer show scattered finish wear. The buttplate has a silver-gray patina with traces of plating
in protected areas. The case colors on the dust cover and receiver have faded to a silver gray. The delicate engraved
scrollwork and highly detailed game scene are sharp. The inscription on the left side plate has been expertly freshened. The
lever latch is a correct replacement. The highly figured stock and forearm show handling wear with worn checkering and a number of shallow dents and scratches; however, most of the high polish piano finish remains. Although this fine rifle shows period use, it remains an exceptional example of 19th century craftsmanship and is a rare example of deluxe, special order, factory engraved and inscribed Winchester Model 1873 rifle signed by Master Engraver John Ulrich.
Provenance: The Dr. Edwin X. Amoss Collection; Property of a Gentleman.
