The famous factory engraved Smith & Wesson New Model No. 3 shipped to Roosevelt just as he left to join the Rough Riders was sold in our last auction in December 2022 and clearly demonstrates his interest
in this model. The Rough Riders’ success in the Battle of San Juan
Hill helped propel Roosevelt to the governor’s mansion in New York in 1899, and then the vice presidency following the death of Vice President Garret Hobart. With the assassination of McKinley at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York, Roosevelt became president, still the youngest person to ever hold the office. Lodge remained in the U.S. Senate from 1893 until his death in 1924 and became the majority leader.
