Attractive and Uniquely Engraved Remington Type II Over/Under Derringer Pistol with Pearl Grips - Serial no. 287, 41 RF cal., 3 inch solid rib bbl., nickel finish, pearl grips. Designed by William Elliot, the Remington Over/Under Derringer remained on the market for nearly 70 years and has become one of the best known of all the American type derringers. This example is a Type II or Model No. 3, and this variation began production in 1888. In all, collectors account for six separate variations associated with this model
of derringer that was manufactured for several decades by Remington. The derringer
offered here is beautifully decorated with period retailer floral punch dot engraving.
The engraving consists mostly of vine-like leaf patterns with scattered floral blossoms throughout. The coverage is featured extensively on both sides of the barrel set and frame along with flourishes of scrollwork behind the hammer and around the barrel hinge and a series of five-pointed stars on both sides of the center barrel rib. This style of engraving is typically associated with Merwin & Hulbert but has been occasionally found on Remingtons such as
with this example as well as on Smith & Wessons. The top of the barrel rib is marked “REMINGTON ARMS CO. ILION, N.Y.” The matching number “287” is stamped on the left side of the frame under the grip and on the lower barrel. The derringer wears a set of attractive bird’s head pearl grips.
CONDITION: Excellent. The pistol retains 95% plus of the bright nickel finish with a series of tool-like marks on the front grip strap. The engraving is crisp. The attractive grips are also excellent showing a beautiful color. Mechanically excellent. An attractive Remington Type II Over/Under Derringer with a very unique style of period engraving that will add dimension to any Remington or derringer collection.
