Exceptional Factory Exhibition Quality Engraved Remington-Smoot New Model
No. 2 Revolver with Pearl Grips - Serial no. 339, 32 RF cal., 2 3/4 inch solid rib bbl., nickel finish, pearl grips. Only around 3,000 New Model No. 2 revolvers were manufactured around 1877-1885 compared to over 25,000 of the related New Model No. 3 revolvers. Most of these revolvers were plain whereas this incredible example features near full cover factory exhibition quality vine and leaf engraving done in high relief with deep matted background, which
gives a three dimensional effect. The engraving is highly detailed and profuse and includes border motifs throughout and clusters of grapes decorating each side of the frame. Much
of the surface is engraved than normally found. Only the lower surfaces are left plain. Even
the hammer is engraved. This model is rarely found with a factory engraving, The coverage
and finesse of the engraving along with the set of pearl grips suggest that the revolver was prepared for exhibition purposes. The engraving is near identical to the exhibition engraved and gold plated Remington Smoot from the George F. Gamble collection featured in our August 2022 auction. The top of the barrel has a rounded blade front sight and “E. REMINGTON & SONS. ILION. N.Y. PAT. W.S. SMOOT. OCT. 21. 1873.” An integral notch rear sight is at the back of the top strap. The revolver wears a lovely set of pearl grips.
CONDITION: Excellent, retaining 97% plus original nickel plating. The engraving is crisp. The grips are also excellent with highly attractive fiery colors. Mechanically excellent. One of the finest factory engraved Remington-Smoot revolvers we have had the pleasure of cataloging! Estimate: 6,000 - 9,000
