Fine Antique Black Powder Colt Single Action Army Revolver
with Factory Letter - Serial no. 70020, 45 LC cal., 7 1/2 inch
round bbl., nickel finish, antique ivory grips. Offered here is an
early example of the legendary Peacemaker in .45 LC that was manufactured in 1881. In the words of Colt author and expert
David Brown, “[T]he Colt Single Action Army .45 was ‘the soldier’s
friend’ throughout the remaining years of the Indian Wars in the West. Adopted also with equal enthusiasm by civilians, it was the pet and the ‘good right arm’ of lawman and outlaw alike on every American frontier
of its era” (“The 36 Calibers of the Colt Single Action Army,” page 70). In the accompanying factory letter the revolver is listed as chambered in
.45 caliber with nickel finish and barrel length and stocks not listed, a standard notation for 7 1/2 inch barrel and walnut stocks, when shipped to M.W. Robinson of New York City on August 16, 1881. This shipment was for 90 guns. The barrel has the one-line Hartford address, the frame has the three-line patent dates marking, and “45 CAL” is marked on the trigger guard. Matching full or partial serial numbers appear on the frame, trigger guard, back strap, cylinder, and barrel.
CONDITION: Fine as a revolver with great, authentic working gun character
while retaining 40% original nickel plating and fine original period grips with highly attractive color and grain. Mechanically functions, but is slightly out of time. Estimate: 3,500 - 5,500
