Fine Cased Pair of Engraved Gold Banded Maclauchlan Percussion Travelers
Pistols -A) Maclauchlan Travelers Pistol - NSN, 64 cal., 5 inch round bbl., brown/blue/ casehardened finish, walnut stock. This is a very fine matched pair of English travelers pistols. The top of the breechblock has a wedge of floral scroll engraving and the top of the barrel
is marked “EDINBURGH” with floral scroll engraving ahead of the marking. There is a gold
inlaid band on the breech plug, the barrel tang is engraved with a leaf design and the lock
is marked “Maclauchlan”. There is simple floral scroll engraving on the back action lock, hammer and trigger guard. Iron swivel mounted ramrod with button head, brown Damascus barrel with blue trigger guard and casehardened lock and hammer, fish motif hammer,
bead and fixed notch sights and mounted with a full walnut stock with checkered grip, horn forend and cap compartment on the butt with floral engraved lid and silver thumb plate marked with a motto “VIRTUS SUB PONDERE CRESCIT” on a ribbon over a fish, and the initials “I.M.”. Complete in a wooden case with a brass inscription disk on the lid with the same inscription as the thumb plate, hunter green velvet lining with pressed decorative border design on the inside of the lid and attached label with a man and hunting dogs, and reading “MACLAUCHLAN/Gun Maker/24/SOUTH FREDERICK STREET/EDINBURGH/Powder and Shot with Shooting Tackle/of every description”. The case has six compartments with two having
lids with pulls and contains a small flask, Eley cap tin, nipple wrench with ebony handle, and wooden ramrod.
CONDITION: Very fine. The barrel retains 85% of the original brown finish and all of the Damascus pattern remains. The hammer retains 70% original bright case colors with a
smooth brown patina on the balance. All of the gold inlay remains. The lock shows 60% original case colors in protected areas around the hammer. There is scattered bright original blue finish on the trigger guard and ramrod pipe mixed with smooth brown patina. The
stock is fine with a number of minor dents and scratches especially on the left flat, a stress crack at the lock plate screw, and crisp checkering. Clear markings and engraving. The
hammer does not hold at the half cock position, otherwise action is fine. The case is good
with an old minor crack in the lid, scattered minor dings and scratches, some minor contact wear on the lining and some heavy wear from the hammer of the top gun. The accessories
are all fine. B) Maclauchlan Travelers Pistol - NSN, 64 cal., 5 inch round bbl., brown/blue/ casehardened finish, walnut stock. Described in “A”.
CONDITION: Very fine. The barrel retains 80% of the original thin brown finish and Damascus pattern with some scattered minor spotting. The breech plug, ramrod pipe and trigger guard show strong traces of original bright blue finish with a smooth mottled brown patina on the balance. The lock shows 50% original case colors. All of the gold inlay remains. The stock is fine with a number of minor dents and scratches especially on the left flat and crisp checkering. Clear markings and engraving.
Mechanically excellent.

Exceptional Pair of Engraved Westley Richards “Manstopper” Percussion Belt Pistols -A) Westley Richards Belt
Pistol - Serial no. 748, 15 Bore cal., 6 1/2 inch octagon bbl., brown/casehardened/blue finish, walnut stock. According to Westley Richards published serial number ranges for pistols, these pistols were the last pair in 1853. They are .68 caliber/15 bore and thus real manstoppers firing over 400 grain round balls. The smoothbore, Damascus barrels have nicely crowned muzzles, fixed bead front sights, “WESTLEY RICHARDS, 170, NEW BOND ST. LONDON” signed on top, swivel mounted ramrods beneath, and casehardened breeches with pierced platinum liners and platinum bands. The flat, casehardened locks have scroll engraving, “WESTLEY RICHARDS” signed below the bolster, and sliding half-cock safety latches. The wrist and wedge escutcheons are silver. The trigger plates are casehardened and feature pineapple finials. The blued trigger guards have scroll engraving and the serial numbers. The casehardened pommel caps have floral designs on the trapdoors. Blued belt hooks are fitted to the left stock flats, and the nearly full-length stocks have checkered wrists. CONDITION: Exceptionally fine with 85% plus original brown and distinct Damascus patterns along the barrel, crisp engraving and markings, 70% original case colors, crisp engraving, 90% original blue, and generally only minor overall wear. The stock is very fine and has crisp checkering, smooth finish, and light dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent. B) Westley Richards Belt Pistol - Serial no. 748, 15 Bore cal., 6 1/2 inch octagon bbl., brown/casehardened/blue finish, walnut stock. See “A.” CONDITION: Exceptionally fine with 85% plus original brown and distinct Damascus patterns on the barrel, crisp engraving and markings, 80% original case colors, crisp markings and engraving, 90% original blue, and generally only minor overall wear. The stock is also very fine and has crisp checkering, smooth finish, and some minor scrapes and dings. Mechanically excellent. Estimate: 7,500 - 9,500
