Factory Game Scene Engraved Aguirre y Aranzabal Hand Detachable Sidelock Double
Barrel Ejector Shotgun Three Barrel Set with Case -
Serial no. 41585, 12 gauge, 28 1/4 inch vent rib bbl., blue/
coin finish, walnut stock. Blued “Cromo-Niquel” steel barrels with dual bead sights on the matted
vent rib which is marked with a single gold “1”, correct Spanish proofs dating to 1951, floral scroll engraving around the upper breech,
and chambers proved at 70 mm (2 3/4 inches) with automatic ejectors. The coin finished hand detachable sidelock action displays
floral scroll engraving surrounding a scene showing mallards in flight over a marsh on the left, a scene of pheasants in an upland scene
on the right, and gold inlaid “RUTH C. ATWOOD” on the underside. The toplever is gold inlaid with the AYA logo. The gun features a
single trigger and a tang mounted safety switch with gold inlaid “S”. Beautifully figured, multi-point checkered three-piece forend with
engraved fittings, including the Deeley latch release, and pistol grip stock with engraved grip cap and orange rubber recoil pad. This
gun was previously documented with stickers on the stock indicating use in the Spanish shooting competition Trio de Pichon in 1956;
however, these stickers are no longer present. While no information on Atwood’s international shooting campaign can be found, she
was clearly a force to be reckoned with, having many excellent trap scores published in the Miami, Florida, and Tucson, Arizona, newspapers from 1949-1952, right around
the time that this gun was built. Ruth and her husband Hank were so well known in the trap shooting community that, according to the March 21, 1949 Miami Herald, they
had their own event named after them. Included with the gun are two extra barrel sets, one measuring 28 inches and the other 29 3/4 inches with gold inlaid “2” and “3” respectively and both
with 2 3/4 inch chambers with ejectors. Also included is a leather bound takedown case that houses the whole set, a pair of leather barrel sleeves marked “2” and “3”, and assorted small parts. Barrel measurements for set “3” (U/O): bore diameter nine inches from the breech both proved and measured at 18.5 mm (.728 inches); choke constriction .021/.037 inches; minimum wall thickness .030/.032 inches. Barrel measurements set “2” (U/O): bore diameter nine inches from the breech both proved and measured at 18.5 mm (.728 inches); choke constriction .021/.022 inches; minimum wall thickness .027/.026 inches. Barrel and stock measurements set “1” (U/O): bore diameter nine inches from the breech both proved at 18.5 mm (.728 inches) and both measured at .727 inches; choke constriction .003/.010 (jug) inches; minimum wall thickness .029/.030 inches; 1 1/8 inch drop at comb; 1 3/4 inch drop at heel; 13 1/2 inch length of pull; weight 8 lbs. 1 oz.
CONDITION: Excellent, retaining 95% plus original blue and coin finishes with minor handling evidence. The wood is very fine with some small nicks and scratches, some residue on the underside of the stock from the now removed stickers (see above), most of the finish remaining, and crisp checkering. The extra barrel sets are both very fine with light handling evidence. The case is very good with mild storage/travel evidence. Mechanically excellent.
Estimate: 7,000 - 11,000
