Desirable J. Lowe Sheffield “The Great Far West Hunting” Bowie Knife with Pearl Grip - Manufactured by J. Lowe,
almost certainly around the mid-19th century in Sheffield, England. It measures 16 3/8 inches overall with a 9 7/8 inch blade featuring a long, deep clip point. The left side of the blade is marked “THE GREAT FAR WEST HUNTING KNIFE” and “BEST QUALITY”, both in banners near an eagle, and a stag marked “HARY AWAY” followed by a pack of dogs and a hunter on horseback with a rifle. The left ricasso is marked with an elephant trademark over “J. LOWE”. It has a German silver oval guard and ferrule with floral motifs, a lightly fluted box-shaped pearl grip, and a bulbous
German silver pommel featuring a deer scene on each side and floral motifs.
CONDITION: Fine, the blade primarily bright with most of the markings crisp, some scattered speckling of light pitting
and brown patina, and a few minor nicks in the edge. The German silver shows an attractive, lightly aged patina.
The grip is very good with minimal handling evidence. An attractive Bowie knife from a desirable Sheffield knife maker! Estimate: 3,500 - 6,500

Attractive Inscribed Patriotic and Horse Head Pommel Bowie Knife with Sheath - Likely manufactured c. the mid-19th century, this very attractive Bowie knife bears only the faint remnants of a maker’s mark, but was likely made in Sheffield, England. It measures 13 3/4 inches overall with a 8 3/8
inch clip point blade, the left ricasso bearing a few faint letters of a maker’s mark. The guard is German silver and is a twisted snake motif. It is fitted with smooth pearl grip scales with a German silver
escutcheon on the left marked with the initials “P.H.S.”. The pommel is also German silver with American eagle and shield motifs and a horse’s head. Includes a brown leather sheath with German silver fitting.
CONDITION: Good, the blade mostly bright with moderate wear and sharpening evidence and some light pitting scattered throughout. The German silver shows an attractively ages patina overall.
The grip scales are very good with some filling repair visible on the two forward pins, minor cracking, and chipping on the balance. The sheath
is very good with mild wear. Estimate: 3,000 - 5,000

Attractive George Wostenholm & Son Sheffield I-XL
Spearpoint Dagger with Sheath - Manufactured in the mid-late
1800s by the George Wostenholm firm of Sheffield, England. The
Wostenholm company moved into their huge Washington Works
facility, perfectly positioning them to deal with the demands of
the American market during the period of western expansion. The overall length is 12
3/8 inches with an 7 7/8 inch spearpoint blade. Both ricassos are marked with the maker’s
mark and the “I-XL” trademark. The hilt and pommel are of German silver, elliptical German
silver guard, and smooth antique imitation tortoise shell grip scales with a German silver escutcheon on one side. The sheath is of brown leather and lightly tooled.
CONDITION: Very good, the blade mostly bright with some scattered mild pitting and crisp markings. The German silver shows an attractive lightly aged patina. The grips are fine with a few hairline cracks and a few minor chips. The scabbard is fair with the tip absent and mild wear. Estimate: 1,600 - 2,500

Attractive Etched Blade Curr & Co. Sheffield Spearpoint Dagger with German Silver Grip and Sheath - Likely manufactured in the 1850s to 1870s in Sheffield, England, it is the writer’s belief that this firm was in operation for a short time before partnering
to become Sibley, Lindsey & Curr Co. It measures 12 3/4 inches overall with an 8 inch spearpoint blade, which is etched on the left with flourishes of floral scroll and “NEVER DRAW ME WITHOUT REASON/NOR SHEATH ME WITHOUT HONOUR”. The left ricasso is marked CURR & Co./SHEFFIELD”. It has an elliptical German silver guard and an ornately case flatware-style German silver grip. Includes a red leather sheath with German silver fittings. CONDITION: Fine, the blade mostly bright original polish with some scattered light pitting and mostly well-defined etching. The German silver shows an attractively aged patina overall. The sheath is also fine with some moderate wear and minor dents in the fittings. Estimate: 1,800 - 2,750
