  LOT 153 Civil War U.S. Spencer Model 1860 Army Repeating Rifle - Serial no. 22979, 52 Spencer cal., 30 inch round bbl., blue/casehardened finish, walnut stock. 11,470 of these innovative rifles were manufactured for the U.S government in 1863 and 1864. Rifles of this model were carried by Colonel Wilder’s “Lightning Brigade” at Hoover’s Gap and General Custer’s Michigan “Wolverines” at Gettysburg. It has a brass blade front sight that doubles as a bayonet lug, six-groove rifling, three barrel bands, an 800 yard folding ladder rear sight, the three-line Spencer address and patent marking on top of the breech, and smooth buttstock with standard 7-round tubular magazine inserted through the buttplate. Matching serial number “22979” marked on the frame and bottom of the barrel. Single letter inspection initials on various components. Two faintly visible boxed script inspection cartouches stamped on the left of the buttstock behind the rear lock screw. Large initials “HL” carved in the right of the buttstock.
  CONDITION: Very good, a fresh example showing signs of genuine period use, with smooth brown patina overall on the metal surfaces. The wood is also very good with a darkened appearance, general wear and numerous scattered scratches and “battle scars” along with the carved initials as mentioned. Mechanically excellent. This is a righteous example of a desirable Spencer Model 1860 Army rifle worthy of any Civil War firearms collection!

Model 1863 rifles with front sights doubling as bayonet lugs were manufactured (C,30000-C,40000 range) compared to over 60,000 New Model 1863 carbines, making them a desirable Sharps variation. “NEW MODEL 1863” marked
on top of the barrel behind the R.S. Lawrence patent ladder rear sight with 900 yard center notch, Sharps 1848 patent date marked on the left of the receiver with the R.S. Lawrence 1859 patent date and Sharps 1852 patent date on the lock, serial number “C,37479” marked on the upper receiver tang and on the underside of the barrel, with three barrel bands, sling swivels mounted on the bottom of the middle barrel band and buttstock, single letter inspection marks stamped on various components, “M.N.M” inspection initials on the left barrel flat at the

CONDITION: Exceptionally fine. The musket retains its original “national armory bright” polished appearance with some scattered light freckling, and sharp markings and edges in the metal overall. The rear sight retains 99% original
blue finish. The stock is also exceptionally fine with attractive original raised grain and absolutely distinct edges, a few scattered pressure dents on the left flat, moderate gouging on the right edge below the barrel, a few light handling marks, and exceptionally crisp cartouches. Mechanically excellent. Included bayonet is very fine. This is an attractive original, exceptional example of an important Civil War rifle musket and a key Colt longarm! Estimate: 2,750 - 4,250
LOT 156 U.S. Harpers Ferry Model 1819 Hall Confederate Attributed Percussion Conversion Breech Loading Rifle - NSN, 52 cal., 32 5/8 inch round bbl., brown/casehardened finish, walnut stock. Designed from the ground up by John Hall including the machinery and methods of manufacturing, these rifles were very innovative for the time and are considered the first firearm to successfully achieve true parts interchangeability, the first nationally adopted breech loading firearm, and also the first breech loading firearm to see widespread military use. In 1826, a government commission disassembled 100 Hall rifles, mixed up the parts, and re-assembled them on newly received stocks with no reported problems and thus confirmed Hall’s success. This example has been converted to percussion from its original flintlock configuration, which was commonly done by the Confederacy during the Civil War. Standard offset blade and notch sights, button head ramrod, “J. H. HALL/H. FERRY/US/1831” marked on the breech block. Includes an extra nipple. CONDITION: Very good as period converted to percussion, exhibiting a mix of original brown finish and gray and brown patina on the barrel, frame and fittings, and traces of casehardened finish with smooth brown and gray patina on the breech block showing clear markings. The stock is very good as lightly sanded and re-oiled, with some cracks and re-glued sections visible. Mechanically fine. Estimate: 2,250 - 3,500

Exceptional Civil War U.S. Colt Model 1861 Special Percussion Rifle-Musket with Bayonet - NSN, 58 cal., 40 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. An estimated 100,000 in total of these Colt special rifle-muskets were manufactured throughout the Civil War under contract with the Union and state governments. This model is based on the Enfield Pattern 1853 and has many features that were subsequently incorporated into the Springfield Model 1863 rifle-musket. This example has standard markings and features with an “1864” dated lock and barrel, “M.N.M” inspection initials on the left barrel flat at the breech, and two boxed script inspection cartouches including “AWM” and “JT” (John Taylor) stamped
