Historic Bronze Memorial Plaque Made of Salvaged Material from the Sunken
U.S.S. Maine Ship - This bronze memorial plaque was made from salvaged material from the sunken U.S.S. Maine ship. The plaque says “IN MEMORIAM/U.S.S.MAINE/ DESTROYED IN HAVANA HARBOR/FEBRUARY 15TH 1898/THIS TABLET IS CAST FROM METAL RECOVERED FROM THE U.S.S. MAINE”. The original sculptor of this memorial plaque was Charles Keck, and 1,000 of these were reportedly made at the Jonathan Williams Foundry in 1913, as marked in small text in the bottom right corner of the plaque next to a opyright symbol. “815” is marked along the bottom edge of the plaque. A smaller plaque attached to the period wood frame is stamped “COL. JOHN JACOB ASTOR/CAMP 28/USWV” (United Spanish War Veterans). John Jacob Astor IV (July 13, 1864-April 15, 1912) was an American business magnate and lieutenant colonel in the Spanish-American War. From 1894 to 1896, he was a colonel on the military staff of New York Governor Levi P. Morton. Shortly after the outbreak of the Spanish- American War in 1898, Astor personally financed a volunteer artillery unit known as the “Astor Battery”, which served in the Philippines. In May 1898, Astor was appointed a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Volunteers and served as an officer on the staff of Major General William Shafter in Cuba, during the Santiago Campaign. He was later given a brevet (war/temporary promotion) to colonel in recognition of his services. He was mustered out of the Volunteer Army in November 1898. During the war, he allowed his yacht Nourmahal to be used by the U.S. government. He appeared in the films “President McKinley’s Inspection of Camp Wikoff” (1898) and “Col. John Jacob Astor, Staff and Veterans of the Spanish-American War” (1899). As a result of his military service, Astor was entitled to the Spanish Campaign Medal. After the war, Astor was often referred to as “Colonel Astor”. He died in the sinking of the RMS Titanic during the early hours of April 15, 1912. Astor was the richest passenger aboard the RMS Titanic and was thought to be among the richest people in the world at that time. CONDITION: Very fine overall with general light patina/aging. Estimate: 2,500 - 5,000

Rare Cadet Bayonet with Scabbard for the U.S. Springfield Krag- Jorgensen Rifle - The Krag-Jorgensen Cadet Bayonet was an item of uniform dress for the students of the United States Military Academy. The USMA would use variants of the Krag bayonet into the 1960s, but the original short model was retired early, and existing stocks of standard Krag bayonets made surplus by the introduction of the 1903 Springfield were used instead. Only 481 of the 1900 dated short Cadet bayonets were produced. Measuring 13 3/8 inches in overall length, this bayonet is fitted with an 8 3/4 inch blade, marked “1900” on the right side and “US” on the left. The broad single fullers run just short of 6 inches, and are properly stopped on each end; a traditional Krag bayonet cut to this length would have the fullers running off one end or the other. The hilt is polished bright, with a set of smooth grips. The scabbard is the early 1897 type particular to the Cadet with a belt hook attachment that swivels and has a pin and slot configuration at the attachment of the hook to limit rotation of the belt hook to 100 degrees (referenced as a “2nd Version” in Hartman’s book and just a “Type No. 1” in Cole’s book). Initials “HA” carved in the right grip panel of the bayonet. CONDITION: The bayonet is fine, with some mild spotting and light pitting visible on the hilt and base and a bright blade with some light freckling and sharp markings. The scabbard is excellent with 97% original blue finish and a few light handling marks. Estimate: 2,000 - 3,000
