Rare and Highly Desirable World War I Era
U.S. Navy Curtiss Flying Boat Propeller - This
early style propeller is laminate in construction
and features the distinct cutout for use on the
Curtiss flying boat. The wooden surfaces have
maroon varnish and white paint applied with the
tips of the propeller sheathed in brass which has
been riveted on. While most of the markings on
the propeller are obscured, a visible “U(anchor)S”
marking is clearly legible. The propeller measures
104 1/4”. The Curtiss flying boat is seen by many
as the grandfather of commercial aviation
thanks to its capability to fly across the Atlantic
and ability to carry cargo. Though the Curtiss flying boats purchased by the United States did not take part in the war effort in Europe, it was heavily used to patrol coastal waters for possible U-boats. These U.S. Navy propellers are seldom seen, as reportedly only 20 Curtiss flying boats were procured by the U.S. Navy in total. CONDITION: Very good, retaining 95% textured maroon varnish and 80% white paint with some storage and handling marks, a chip on the right side, and a few patches of flaking on the white paint revealing the attractively aged wood below. The brass tips show an attractive age darkened patina. These United States Navy propellers are seldom seen, this is your chance to get your hands on one of these extremely rare World War I artifacts!
