Exceptional Matched Pair of Consecutively Serial Numbered Howard Dove Signed Master Engraved Third Generation Colt Single Action Army Revolvers with Factory Letter and Boxes
-A) Colt Single Action Army Revolver - Serial no. SA22756, 44 special cal., 4 3/4 inch round bbl., blue/casehardened finish, plastic grips. This is an impressive pair of exquisitely detailed engraved
Colt classics that are consecutively serial numbered and hand engraved by Colt Master Engraver Howard Dove. Howard Dove was known as the “Official Engraver” by the Colt Collectors Association, and one of only two engravers in more modern times to be employed by both the Colt custom shop and Winchester at the same time before his death in 1994. His work is highly sought after by collectors. At least 80% of the metal surfaces are engraved with Grade “B” floral scroll engraving with a punch dot back ground. The engraving is found on the barrel, frame, ejector rod housing, cylinder flats, trigger guard and upper back strap. The left side of the barrel is marked “COLT SINGLE ACTION ARMY .44 SPECIAL” in a banner, the left side of the frame is marked with the two-line, three patent dates followed by the Rampant Colt, and the matching serial number is found on the bottom of the frame, and on
the left side of each grip strap under the grip. Dove signed and dated each grip frame under the left grip panel: “HOWARD DOVE - COLT ENGR NOV. 79.” On the “A” gun the serial numbers on the grip straps have second to last number as a “3” with “5” stamped over it and the inside of the grips are numbered “22786”, more than likely a error at the factory. The “B” gun has correctly stamped serial numbers on
the grip straps and matching numbered grips. Standard blade front and frame notch rear sights and fitted with black checkered Rampant Colt/American Eagle relief grips. The frame is case colored and
the remaining metal surfaces are blue. The accompanying factory letter verifies both serial numbers, caliber, barrel length, blue finish, with grips as “Not Listed”, the factory Grade “B” engraving by Colt Master Engraver Howard Dove and that it was shipped to Gopher Shooters Supply, Inc. in Faribault, MN. On January 15, 1980. The letter also states that this pair was made for Mr. Don Wilkerson, the author of “The Post-War Colt Single Action Revolver”. Each gun comes in a Colt “wood grain” box with Colt Custom Gun Shop end label. The respective end labels are numbered to the gun and note the “B” engraving and consecutive numbering.
