stock with a crescent buttplate. There is a silver plaque mounted on the left of the buttstock marked “PRES TO/W.E. LEARNED/By/FRIENDSHIP LODGE/#66 COOKSHIRE/SEPT-26- 19”. The silver plaque shows an attractively aged patina. The wood is also very fine with some scattered minor handling marks. Mechanically excellent. Provenance: The Wayne Connor Collection. Unusual Documented Antique Winchester First Model 1873 Carbine Conversion Lever Action Musket with Factory Letter - Serial no. 22489, 44-40 WCF cal., 30 inch round bbl., blue finish, walnut stock. Originally manufactured in 1876 as a First Model carbine with dual integral dust cover guide grooves on top of the receiver and a “thumbprint” checkered dust cover. The included factory letter states that the carbine was then altered at the factory to
musket configuration with an angular bayonet on 7 March 1879 and shipped from the warehouse three days later in order number 14808.
There are two visible filler screws on the left of the receiver where the saddle ring staple was removed. The barrel has the standard two-line address and King’s patent marking on top and British proofs on the upper left of the barrel and receiver at the breech. There is a faint J. Kerr London Armoury stamp on the right side of the buttstock. Interestingly, the bottom of the cartridge elevator is marked “38 CAL.” a caliber not introduced until 1879, and not the caliber that the musket is chambered in, indicating that this musket maybe have been somewhat of a factory “parts” conversion, potentially for submission for a military contract (Spanish military contract Model 1873 muskets also shipped in 1879). The model designation is on the upper tang and the serial number is on the lower tang. It is fitted with a block blade front sight and folding ladder rear sight, as well as sling swivels. It is mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with a carbine/military buttplate. CONDITION: Very good, retains 20% of the original blue finish with the balance having thinned to mostly a smooth grey patina and some scattered patches of light pitting. The lightly sanded and re-oiled wood is also very good with some scattered minor handling marks. Mechanically fine. Estimate: 4,000 - 6,000
LOT 36 Scarce Winchester Model 1895 Takedown .405 WCF Rifle with British Proofs - Serial no. 76143, 405 WCF cal., 24 inch round bbl., blue finish, walnut stock. This is a desirable example of a Winchester Model 1895 .405 WCF Takedown rifle that was manufactured in 1914. The rifle is chambered for the very desirable .405 W.C.F. cartridge and has the takedown barrel seldom found on Model 1895 Rifles. The 24 inch round barrel has a “Winchester Express” front sight with bead and a rare Winchester Express rear sight with one-fixed and three folding leaves graduated from 100-400 yards. The rifle has a blued barrel, receiver, lever and checkered steel shotgun buttplate. The stock and forearm are straight grain walnut with a varnish finish. The forearm tip has an ebony inlay. The left side of the barrel is roll-stamped: “-NICKEL STEEL BARREL-/ESPECIALLY FOR SMOKELESS POWDER” in two lines below the rear sight. The caliber designation “405 W.C.F.” is stamped on the upper left side of the barrel. Oval Winchester “W/P” proof marks are stamped on the top of the barrel and the receiver. The elongated, two-line, Winchester legend and patent dates are roll-stamped on the left side of the receiver. The upper tang is roll-stamped: “MODEL 1895/-WINCHESTER-/TRADE MARK REG.IN U.S.A.PAT. OFF” in three lines. The serial number is stamped across the bottom of the lower tang. British Nitro Proof marks and London “Crown/V” and “Crown/CP” proof and view marks are stamped on the left side of the barrel and on the takedown collar, left upper side of the receiver and on the top of the bolt. The number “56006” and some un-identified markings are stamped on the bottom of the stock behind the tang. The significance of the number and markings is unknown. CONDITION: Fine. The rifle retains 40% of the original blue finish. The barrel, takedown collar, magazine, lever and bolt retain nearly all of the blue finish. The finish on the receiver has worn to a smooth, silver-gray patina on contact points and is 30% intact. The buttplate has a silver-gray patina. The markings on the barrel and receiver are crisp. The stock and forearm are very good and retain most of the original varnish finish. Wear is limited to scattered minor handling marks. Mechanically excellent.
