Engraved and Raised Relief Carved Pair of Chateau Double Barrel Swivel Breech Flintlock Pistols -A) Chateau “Wender” Pistol - NSN, 24 bore cal., 10 1/4 inch round bbl., bright finish, relief carved walnut stock. Claude Chateau of Paris was active in the last quarter of the 17th century and first quarter of the 18th century, and his son Alexander was active c. 1714-44. These pistols each have two smoothbore barrels with sighting flats, copper blade front sights, scroll and mask patterns, and dedicated frizzens and pans for each barrel. The pans and frizzens are designed so that the bottom of the frizzens fits over raised borders around the pans to help keep priming powder in and water out. The are holes in the side of the pans that align with the vents on the barrels. Each pistol has one back action lock signed “CHATEAV/A PARIS.” Pulling back at the front of the trigger guards allows the barrels to rotate. The brass furniture has scroll engraving. The stocks have incised and raised relief floral and scroll engraving. Each pistol has one ramrod. CONDITION: Fine with gray and brown patina on the iron, slightly worn engraving, mild pitting, aged patina on the brass, some minor repairs visible in the otherwise fine wood, crisp carving, and mild overall wear. Attractive Pair of John Williams Flintlock Holster Pistols
-A) J. Williams Flintlock Pistol - NSN, 60 cal., 8 7/8 inch round bbl., bright finish, hardwood stock. This is a desirable early pair of British
flintlock pistols by John Williams. The characteristics of these pistols, which include serpent side plates, banana shaped lockplates, unbridled frizzens, and burl wood stocks with bulbous butts, suggest manufacture very early in the 18th century. There were multiple John Williams gunmakers
active in London in the first half of the 18th century, including a John Williams who began as an apprentice in 1693, started his own business
in 1700, and died in 1731. These desirable early pistols are signed “IOHN/WILLIAMS” on
the locks and top of the barrels and have “IW” maker marks and London proofmarks on the left at the breech. The locks have light lined
borders, fleur-de-lis style finials on the frizzen springs, and fenced pans. The barrels also have rounded blade
front sights, girdled transition points and breeches, and light border engraving at the breech ends and tangs. The brass
furniture has cast and engraved grotesque style patterns such as scrolling serpentine side plates and masks on the tendril pommel caps. The stocks have attractive contrasting burl/
rootwood patterns. CONDITION: Very good with dark brown and gray patina throughout, mild pitting, fairly distinct markings, crisp decoration, general moderate wear, and attractive aged patina on the furniture. The stock is also very good and has general light scratches and marks, a few small chips, spliced forend and other smaller discreet repairs, and attractive contrast. Mechanically fine. B) J.
