Very Fine World War II U.S. Stevens Model 520-30
Slide Action Trench Shotgun - Serial no. 64669, 12 gauge, 20
inch round bbl., blue finish, walnut stock. This is a very fine representative
example of a World War II U.S. contract Stevens Model 520-30 trench shotgun
with the correct bayonet lug adapter and ventilated six-hole handguard. A
martial variant of a John Browning designed sporting gun, the 520 trench
gun was originally developed in response to a World War I request for new fighting shotguns for the
American Expeditionary Force. It made a strong impression on the evaluators but did not make it into the field before the
armistice was signed. Seeing potential for the gun on the police market, Stevens kept production going until 1932, and at
the outbreak of World War II, the U.S. government bought every 520 that was still in the warehouse. Checked back into the
arsenals at the end of the war, many were sent back into the field for the Korean War and Vietnam. The right of the barrel
has the three-line Stevens company address and the left has the two-line gauge markings. Choke gauges at cylinder. The
left of the receiver is stamped “MOD. 520-30” ahead of “U.S.”, and the correct “P” proof above an ordnance bomb on the right of the barrel at the
breech and left front edge of the receiver. It has an all blue finish with smooth walnut forearm and pistol grip stock with a plastic buttplate. The stock and bayonet lug are correctly fitted with sling swivels. Length of pull is 14 inches. Includes an olive drab green canvas web sling. A 9-digit personal identification number is hand carved on the bottom of the takedown area.
CONDITION: Very fine, retains 85% original blue finish with some light cycling wear on the magazine tube, and carved numbers as mentioned above. The wood is also very fine with some light scratches and dents, a small crack on the right of the wrist, a few minor chips at the edge of the pistol grip and at the toe, and defined edges. Mechanically excellent.
Provenance: The Ron Bucholtz Collection.
Estimate: 5,500 - 8,500
LOT 3301
World War II U.S. Remington Model 1903A4 “Z” Prefix Bolt Action
Sniper Rifle with Weaver M73B1 Scope - Serial no. Z4002904, 30 cal., 24 inch round
bbl., parkerized/blue finish, walnut stock. This is one of the scarce “Z” prefix M1903A4 Sniper rifles
manufactured by Remington Arms Company for the United States Army in World War II. These were the standard
sniper rifles during World War II, into Korea and even the early days of Vietnam. The receiver ring has the properly offset “U.S./REMINGTON/
MODEL 03-A3” marking on the left with the serial number “Z4002904” on the right (the “Z” is stamped sideways in error, giving it the appearance of an “N”). The original iron sights are properly absent as standard on these sniper variants, with a Remington “9-43” dated barrel, and “R” marked bolt with properly turned and contoured handle. Smooth pistol grip scant stock, “RA” (Remington Arms) and boxed “FJA” (Frank J. Atwood) inspection stamps surrounding a crossed cannons Ordnance cartouche on the left stock wrist, double stamped circled “P” proofs
and an “R” stamped behind the trigger guard, with a replaced parkerized checkered steel buttplate. The Weaver M73B1 scope is electro-stenciled serial numbered on the right with “26908”, and mounted on a parkerized Redfield scope base. Includes a M1907 brown leather sling, leather scope lens covers, and oiler/cleaning kit inside the butt compartment.
CONDITION: Very fine, retains 90% plus original parkerized finish and 80% blue finish with some areas of light freckling. The stock is also very fine with defined edges, a few light handling marks, and legible stampings. Mechanically excellent. Included scope is excellent, retains 90% original blue finish with scattered scratches on the tube, and crisp clear optics.
