Extremely Fine Winchester Model 1876 Lever Action Rifle - Serial no. 40650, 40-60 Win cal., 28 inch octagon bbl., blue finish, walnut stock. The Model 1876 was the first Winchester lever action rifle offered in calibers truly suitable for hunting large and dangerous game. The larger caliber Model 1876 was popular among those in the west who believed .44-40 wasn’t quite enough stopping power for whatever they might encounter. With only 63,871 rifles and carbines manufactured between 1876 and 1897 surviving examples of the Model 1876 rifle are scarce. Generally being viewed as a working gun, these rifles are difficult to find in high condition.
  This extremely fine Winchester
Model 1876 rifle will make a worthy addition
to any lever action collection. The rifle was manufactured in 1884 and has a third model receiver with the dust cover guide rail integrally machined to the receiver and
dust cover with serrations at the rear. The rifle is fitted with a dovetail blade front sight and folding ladder rear sight graduated from 2 to 10 and marked “1876” at the
top. The top barrel flat is stamped with the two-line Winchester New Haven address/King’s improvement patent dates ahead of the rear sight and “CAL 40-60” at the breech.
The brass cartridge elevator is stamped “40-60.” The upper tang is marked “MODEL 1876.” flanked by decorative foliate. The serial number is marked on the lower tang. Mounted with a
smooth walnut forearm and straight grip stock with steel forend cap, factory sling swivels, and a crescent buttplate with buttstock compartment (cleaning rod not included).
CONDITION: Extremely fine. The rifle retains 80% plus bright original blue finish with a smooth mottled gray patina on the magazine tube, edge wear, minor flaking on the receiver and buttplate as well as some pin
prick type pitting on the left side of the receiver. 50% of the original nitre blue remains on the loading gate. The hammer retains 85% of the original case colors and the lever has a smooth mottled gray patina with strong traces of original case colors in the protected areas. The wood is very fine with varnish remaining on most of the left side of the buttstock, a third remaining on the right, and a pleasant hand rubbed patina on the forearm and overall a few minor dings. The markings are clear. Mechanically excellent. A truly exceptional Winchester Model 1876 Rifle!
