Rare and Exceptional Factory Engraved Winchester Deluxe Model 1895 Takedown Lever Action Rifle - Serial no. 88536, 30-03 cal., 24 inch round bbl., blue finish, walnut stock. Manufactured in 1915 with factory engraving. According
to Winchester author and expert George Madis, “Engraved Models 95 are very rare; by the time the model 95 was introduced the cost of engraving had become quite high.” The engraving on this rifle consists of floral scrollwork on a punch dot background and is featured on the sides of the receiver. The right side of the receiver has an engraved bear in
a lake scene. Winchester’s “Highly Finished Arms” catalog as reprinted in R.L. Wilson’s “The Book of Winchester Engraving” indicates that Winchester vignettes included a depiction of a bear (page 221) and factory bear scene engraved Model 95s are documented in Madis’“The Winchester Book” on pages 464, 466, 469, 472, and 476. The rifle has German silver blade and elevation adjustable rear sights, matted barrel and special order sling eyelets mounted on the underside of the barrel and buttstock. The left side of the barrel has the two-line nickel steel marking followed by “.30 GOVT.1903,” the left side of the receiver has the two-line address/patent dates marking, the breech end of the barrel and receiver have a factory oval proof, and the upper tang has the three-line model/trade mark information. Mounted on a deluxe checkered forearm and straight grip stock with high gloss lacquer and trapdoor crescent buttplate (cleaning rod not included).
CONDITION: Very fine. The rifle retains 85% plus bright original blue finish with the balance a smooth gray patina and numerous scratches on the buttplate. The wood is fine showing an old applied coat of varnish with a filled circular inlet for a now missing initial plate, some minor pressure dents and scratches and retaining most of the finish. The checkering is crisp overall. Mechanically excellent.
Estimate: 35,000 - 55,000
