Smith & Wesson Model No. 1 First Issue Fourth Type Revolver with Gutta Percha Case - Serial no. 3660, 22 RF cal., 3 3/16 inch solid rib bbl., blue/silver finish, rosewood grips. Offered here is a wonderful example of Smith & Wesson’s Model No. 1 First Issue Fourth Type Revolver complete with an original and highly desirable S&W Gutta Percha case. The Fourth Type Revolvers fall in the estimated 3000 to 4200 serial number range and feature a recoil plate that is reduced
in size compared to its predecessor. The barrel catch is made with
side projections and is spring loaded. The barrel rib has the standard one-line Springfield address, and the cylinder has the patent marking. The matching full serial number (“3660”) appears on the butt and on the inside of both grip panels. A matching assembly mark appears
on the grip frame, cylinder (faint) and barrel. The frame has a silver plated finish, and the barrel and cylinder are blued. The revolver wears
a set of rosewood grips. The original S&W Gutta Percha case features
a decorative relief lid showcasing the image of a No. 1 Revolver
and “MANUFACTURED ONLY BY/SMITH & WESSON,/SPRINGFIELD MASSACHUSETTS”. The interior of the lid has decorative royal purple velvet. The bottom interior of the case is lined in red velvet and contains a cartridge block holding a full count of 56 cartridges.
CONDITION: Fine. The barrel retains 50% original blue finish and the cylinder retains 40% original blue finish with an attractive smooth brown patina on the balance. 95% of the original silver plating
remains on the frame. The fine grips exhibit a repair on the right panel, otherwise minor handling marks and most of the original varnish remaining. Mechanically excellent. The case is fine, showing limited handling/storage marks, some typical high spot wear on the lining and crisp relief motifs. These cases are becoming harder to find, especially
in this fine of condition. The delicate nature of these cases meant that many did not survive. This is a great opportunity to acquire a highly attractive S&W Model No. 1 First Issue Fourth Type Revolver complete with a highly desirable S&W Gutta Percha case.
Provenance: The Mac McCroskie Collection.
