Pair of Engraved and Inlaid Spanish Double Barrel Miquelet Pistols From The Clay Bedford Collection
-A) Spanish Miquelet Pistol - NSN, 67 cal., 8 inch solid rib bbl., blue/bright/gold/ silver finish, walnut stock. The smoothbore barrels have “FABRICADO EN EIBAR” and
“AGUSTIN D YTURRIOZ” in brass inlay along with brass and silver inlaid accents, and deeply fluted ribs with the flute extending onto the standing breeches. There
are sunken “E/CHE/BAR/RIA” maker’s marks on the locks and trigger guards. The furniture
has floral and scroll engraving with areas with gilded backgrounds. The stocks have bird’s head grips with checkering, and raised floral carving around the trigger guards and ramrod pipes. The furniture also appears to have been finished in silver. Includes a “C.P. BEDFORD/803” marked collection tag indicating the pair was in the Clay P. Bedford collection. The maker’s marks are likely for Francisco Lorenzo Echebarria (Echeverria) of Eibar in the first half of the 19th century. There were multiple members of the Echebarria/ Echeverria family and Yturrioz family active in armsmaking in Eibar from the 1830s to the 20th century, including Jose Cruz Echeverria whose son started Star Bonifacio Echeverria, S.A. Yturrioz y Echeveria/Fabrica de Yturrioz Echeverria are also recorded in the 1860s and 1870s. CONDITION: Very fine with attractively aged patina on the brass and silver, most of the gold remaining aside from the left lock mark, traces of silver in the protected areas, and mild overall wear. The ramrod is broken and pinned. The stock is fine and has a coat of protective varnish, distinct checkering and minor marks and scratches. Mechanically fine. B) Spanish Miquelet Pistol - NSN, 67 cal., 8 inch solid rib bbl., blue/bright/gold finish, walnut stock. See “A.” CONDITION: Very fine with attractively aged patina on the brass and silver, most of the gold remaining aside from the right lock mark, traces of original silver in the recesses, dented left muzzle, broken left jaw screw, and mild overall wear. The stock is fine with a coat of protective varnish and has distinct checkering, a chip at the tail of the right lock, cracks under the nose of both locks, and general minor marks and scratches. The foot of the cock or full-cock sear of the left lock could use a little adjustment; otherwise mechanically fine. Provenance: The Clay P. Bedford Collection; Property of a Gentleman. Very Ornate Silver Mounted and Inlaid Left Hand Lock Spanish Miquelet Blunderbuss Belt Pistol - NSN, 28 bore/.54
cal., 9 1/2 inch octagon bbl., bright/silver finish, walnut stock. A
very similar pair with right hand locks are featured on page 270 of “A History of
Spanish Firearms” by Lavin from the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Lavin lists them
as from Ripoll in the early 18th century, and the MET lists them c. 1750-1775. The blunderbuss style barrel is octagonal with a tapered muzzle
section opening up to about 1 1/2 inches. The muzzle and breech end have molding. The length of the barrel is
inlaid with silver and brass inlays in floral and animal patterns, including what look to be two beavers towards the
muzzle. The breech end has a “crown/PA/CHE/CO” maker’s mark, arrows, and floral marks. The miquelet lock is mounted on the left side, and
the right side has a belt hook with pierced design at the tip. The stock is decorated with extensive silver inlays with pierced and engraved floral
and hunting designs, including various animals, hunters on either side of the wrist, a double headed eagle on the underside of the forend, and
a dragon along the “comb.” The trigger guard and buttplate are cast silver. The trigger is a detailed bestial mask with a curved tongue and inlaid eyes. The ramrod has a retaining spring catch, a silver tip, and an iron worm.
CONDITION: Very good with attractive natural aged patina on the silver and brass, moderate pitting on the iron, and mostly age and storage related wear overall. The stock is fine and has dark finish, some cracks and spots of filler, and mild wear. Mechanically fine.
