Factory Engraved J. Purdey & Sons Self-Opening
Sidelock Double Barrel Ejector Shotgun with Case
- Serial no. 25747, 12 gauge, 28 inch solid rib bbl., blue/
casehardened finish, walnut stock. Manufactured between
1938 and 1947 according to the chart on page 126 of
Nigel Brown’s “British Gunmakers Volume One: London”.
Blued steel dovetailed replacement barrels with a single
brass bead sight on the smooth concave solid rib which
is marked “J. PURDEY & SONS. AUDLEY HOUSE. SOUTH
AUDLEY STREET. LONDON. ENGLAND.”, London nitro proofs,
and chambers proved 2 1/2 inches with automatic ejectors. The casehardened self- opening sidelock action displays extensive classic English rose & scroll engraving which extends to the toplever, both tangs, and the triggerguard. The lockplates are both signed “J.PURDEY & SONS.” and the underside is marked “J.PURDEY & SONS/LONDON/ENGLAND.” The gun features bushed firing pins, a single trigger, and a tang mounted automatic safety with gold inlaid “SAFE”. Beautifully figured, multi-point checkered splinter forend with engraved fittings and Anson button release and straight grip stock with teardrop flats and checkered bare butt. Includes a leather bound takedown case with factory trade label and import paperwork. Barrel and stock measurements (R/L): bore diameter nine inches from the breech both proved at .729 inches and measured .735/.736 inches; choke
constriction .009/.024 inches; minimum wall thickness .027/.027 inches; 1 3/8
inch drop at comb; 1 15/16 inch drop at heel; 14 5/8 inch length of
pull; weight 6 lbs 13 oz.
CONDITION: Very fine as factory quality refurbished,
retaining 95% blue and casehardened finishes, section
turning plum on the triggerguard, and light handling
evidence. The wood is very fine with some dings at the
toe, scattered light scratches, and crisp checkering. The
case is very good. Mechanically excellent.
