1876 Lever Action Rifle with Factory Letter - Serial no. 37808, 45-60 cal., 26 inch round bbl., blue/casehardened finish, walnut stock. Offered here is a
highly attractive, high condition special order Winchester Model 1876 Rifle. It
is a third model with an integral dust cover rail and dust cover with finger grip serrations at the rear. The included factory letter confirms the deluxe and special order features that include the checkered stock, half magazine, and shotgun buttplate. As noted in the letter, this rifle was received in the warehouse on October 30, 1883 and shipped the next day on order number 8564 with a 26 inch octagon barrel (factory error as 26 inch round barrel is certainly original) in .45-60 caliber, plain trigger, checkered pistol grip stock, half magazine, shotgun butt, and casehardened receiver. The rifle is fitted with a German silver blade front sight and a folding leaf rear sight marked “1876” on the leaf. The top of the barrel is stamped with the two-line Winchester legend ahead of the rear sight and “CAL. 45-60.” The caliber designation “45-60” is repeated on the cartridge elevator. The serial number appears on the lower tang. The upper tang is marked “MODEL 1876” inside floral brackets. The checkered forearm and pistol grip
the lower tang is marked “XX 567 S.” The matching assembly number “567” along with the letter “P” appears on the stock inlet. The larger caliber Winchester Model 1876 was popular among those in the west that believed .44-40 wasn’t quite enough stopping power for whatever they might encounter. Deluxe variations of the Model 1876 are always in demand, especially in high condition like this example.
CONDITION: Very fine. The barrel retains 80% original blue finish with thinning to brown on the balance. 40% original blue remains on the dust cover. Strong traces of original nitre blue remain on the loading gate. The receiver retains 75% original case colors. The forend cap, hammer and lever retain 70% original case colors. The buttplate is mostly a smooth gray patina with traces of original blue and minor pitting. The wood is fine showing numerous minor handling marks and overall crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent. A very attractive special order Winchester deluxe Model 1876 rifle that will be a great addition to any Winchester collection.
