LOT 1454
World War II U.S. Stevens Model 520-30 Slide Action Trench Shotgun with Bayonet - Serial no. 59026, 12 gauge, 20 inch round bbl., blue/parkerized finish, walnut stock. A martial variant of a John Browning designed sport gun, the 520 trench shotgun was originally
developed in response to a World War I request for new fighting
shotguns for the American Expeditionary Force. It made a strong impression on the evaluators but did not make it into the field before the armistice was signed. Seeing potential for the gun on the police market, Stevens kept production going until 1932, and at the outbreak of World War II, the U.S. government bought every 520 that
was still in the warehouse. Checked back into the arsenals at the end of the war, many were sent back into the field for the Korean War and Vietnam. Fitted with a reproduction bayonet lug adapter
and ventilated handguard. The right side of the barrel has the three-line Stevens Company address. The left side has the two-line gauge markings “PROOF TESTED-12 GAUGE/-2 3/4 INCH CHAMBER-”. Choke gauges at cylinder. The left side of the receiver is stamped “MOD. 520-30”, the correct “P/Ordnance Bomb” proofs are stamped on the right of the barrel and left front edge of the receiver. Fitted with a smooth forearm and pistol grip stock with a black plastic buttplate. The stock and bayonet lug are fitted with sling swivels. “MC/39351” handwritten on the right of the buttstock in black marker. Length of pull is 14 inches. Includes a correct Remington M1917 bayonet dated “10 17”, olive drab green plastic scabbard and olive drab green canvas sling. CONDITION: Very fine. Retains 85% original blue finish on the barrel, magazine tube, receiver and trigger guard with some light cycling wear. 99% original parkerized finish remains on the modern reproduction bayonet lug and handguard. Defined markings and edges in the metal overall. Wood is fine with defined edges, some light scratches and handling marks, a four inch crack on the left of the forearm, and handwritten markings as mentioned above. Mechanically excellent. Included bayonet is fine, scabbard is very fine. Estimate: 3,500 - 5,500

LOT 1456
Scarce World War II U.S. Property Marked Remington Model 31 Slide Action Riot Shotgun - Serial no. 60361, 12 gauge, 20 inch round bbl., blue finish, walnut stock. This is an example of a U.S. Property marked Remington Model 31 riot shotgun as manufactured in June of 1942, one of a reported 8,992 delivered on U.S. government contract between 1940-1944. These shotguns were used mostly for security duties and gunnery training, with some evidence that at least a few Model 31s saw combat use during the war. At the outbreak of World War II, Remington diverted most of its Model 31 shotgun production in order to manufacture M1903 bolt action
rifles, while also concentrating its efforts on manufacturing Model 11 autoloading shotguns for military use, lending to the relative scarcity of U.S. contract Model 31 shotguns. The top of the barrel is roll stamped with the two-line Remington Arms address and patent dates, with the left marked “12 GA. For 2 3/4 inch shells or shorter” ahead of “CYL”. The lower left of the barrel is stamped with the
matching serial number “60361” ahead of the date code “PL” (6/42), and the top of the barrel is roll stamped “U.S. PROPERTY”. The left of the receiver is roll stamped with the Remington name, model and serial number above “U.S.PROPERTY” and the right is stamped with an unidentified “ISP”, likely a police department or prison marking applied post war. It has a brass bead front sight and raised solid matte rib on top of the receiver (only). Fitted with a thirty groove pump handle, pistol grip walnut stock and bakelite Remington serrated buttplate. Crossed cannons ordnance inspection cartouche stamped on the left
of the buttstock. “FIRE” carved in the left of the stock above the safety. CONDITION: Fine, retains 70% faded original blue finish with areas of smooth brown patina on the balance and moderate slide retraction marks visible on the magazine tube and action bar. Stock is very good as revarnished with some scattered light handling marks, some light crazing at the edges, carving as mentioned above, and defined edges. Mechanically excellent. Estimate: 2,500 - 4,000
