LOT 1083
Scarce Documented Simeon North U.S. Contract Model 1826 Navy Flintlock Pistol Dated 1828 - NSN, 54 cal., 8 5/8 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. This rarely seen model is historically significant as the last U.S. Martial pistol manufactured by Simeon North (1765-1852) on government contract. North had been manufacturing pistols under contract since the Model 1799, the first official U.S. Martial pistol. Only 3,000 of these pistols were manufactured c. 1826-1829. It has a brass blade front sight, “scoop” rear sight, left side mounted belt hook, swivel mounted ramrod, and “1828” and “U.S./S. NORTH” marked lock. This exact pistol is pictured on pages 16, 18 and 19 of the book “U.S. Naval Handguns 1808-1911” by Frederick Winter in which he states, “These pistols were usually inspected by Elisha Toby (ET) and the barrel marked P, US and ET. This specimen, as can be seen on Plate IIIc, is marked CI over USN over P on the barrel and the stock is stamped CI over P on the left side of the tang near the breech... Thomas Ap. Catesby Jones used the C.I. initials for his mark. The only problem is that all the information seen indicates that Jones inspected only the 1826 Evans pistol which is identical to the North 26 and most parts are interchangeable between the two guns. This means either the gun in Plate III is an Evans with a North lock or Jones did inspect some North 26 guns.” CONDITION: Good as reconverted to flintlock configuration with some areas of light pitting, traces of applied brown finish on the lock, and mostly legible markings in the metal. Wood is very good with mostly original raised grain, various cracks and repairs, and defined inspection stampings. Mechanically fine. Provenance: The Frederick Winter Collection; Property of a Gentleman. Estimate: 2,500 - 4,000 LOT 1084 Scarce Documented War of 1812 Era U.S. Evans Contract Flintlock Pistol - NSN, 69 cal., 9 inch round bbl., brown finish, walnut stock. A limited number of these pistols, patterned closely after the French An. XIII cavalry pistol, were manufactured in the War of 1812 under contract with one or more states by Edward Evans of Evansburg, Pennsylvania, likely on contract with the state governments of Pennsylvania and Massachusetts. Some examples are known with 1814 markings, suggesting a rough year of manufacture for the group. Marked VANS” on the lock at center and “P” in a circle stamped on the barrel on the left of the breech. The stock is unmarked. “XIII” markings in concealed areas including the bottom of the barrel at the breech, the side of the barrel tang screw and bottom of the lock bridle. The inside of the lock has a rough “H” stamp. A tapered iron ramrod with button head is fitted below the barrel. This exact pistol is pictured on page 39 of the book “U.S. Martial Single Shot Pistols” by Daniel D. Hartzler and James B. Whisker. CONDITION: Very good with an applied brown finish above scattered moderate pitting, and clear markings in the metal. Wood is also very good as lightly sanded and re-oiled with some light handling marks, a minor crack at the tail of the lock, and defined edges. Mechanically functions with manual assistance, the trigger requires extra pressure. Provenance: The Ray Layton Collection; The Robert A. Sadler Collection; Property of a Gentleman. Estimate: 2,750 - 4,250 LOT 1085 Rare Simeon North Contract U.S. Model 1826 Navy Flintlock Pistol Dated 1827 - NSN, 54 cal., 8 5/8 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock.
