Engraved Probin Brass Barreled Flintlock
Blunderbuss with Snap Bayonet - NSN, 12 gauge, 14 1/4 inch round bbl.,
bright finish, walnut stock. Commercial blunderbusses like this one were the combat shotguns of their day and were popular defensive weapons, particularly for guarding coaches from highwaymen
in 18th century England. A blunderbuss provided significant firepower, a better chance of hitting your adversary, and could be loaded more easily thanks to its funneled muzzle. This c. 1780 blunderbuss has a multi-stage brass barrel that flares around
1 3/8 inches at the muzzle and is marked with London style proofs and engraved with a simple border towards the breech. A 13 inch folding “snap” or “sprung” bayonet is fitted on top and released via a sliding catch on the upper tang. The lock is signed “Probin” likely for John Probin
of the gunmaking family of Birmingham. It has a stepped tail and some light borders. The furniture is brass and engraved with floral, scroll, and border patterns, including a pineapple style trigger guard finial. The stock has broad diamond checkering with the diamond lightly divided into quadrants each
marked with a small “x.” Includes a modern brass tipped ramrod.
CONDITION: Very good with attractive aged patina on the brass barrel and furniture, dark brown patina and some minor pitting on the lock and bayonet, and generally mild overall wear. The stock is also very good and has some darker spots, numerous light dings and scratches throughout, distinct checkering, and faint repairs. Mechanically fine.
Estimate: 3,750 - 5,000

Finely Engraved Brass Barrel Barber Flintlock Blunderbuss - NSN, 28
gauge, 15 1/4 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. Commercial blunderbusses like this one were popular for guarding coaches from highwaymen in 18th century England. A blunderbuss provided significant
firepower, a better chance of hitting your adversary, and could be loaded more easily than a firearm without a funneled muzzle. This c. 1760 blunderbuss has a multi-stage brass barrel in approximately 28 bore that flares a little over an inch at the muzzle and is marked with “LONDON” and Tower private proofs. The breech end and iron tang have scroll engraving.
The lock also has scroll patterns, double lined borders, and “BARBER” maker’s mark at the center. Barber is a noted, high quality maker. The furniture is brass with some floral and border engraving. The stock has a raised plateau around the barrel tang.
CONDITION: Fine with attractively aged patina on the brass barrel and furniture, smooth brown patina on the lock, crisp engraving and markings, mild pitting mainly on the frizzen, and general mild overall wear. The refinished stock is very good and has some repaired cracks mainly in the forend, some circular texture in the finish from likely being wrapped in bubble wrap, and light dings and scratches. Mechanically fine.
