Second Year Production Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle - Serial
no. 5349, 40-82 WCF cal., 26 inch octagon bbl., blue/casehardened finish, walnut
stock. Manufactured in 1887, the second year of the production. The Model 1886
with its reliable action and powerful cartridge offerings would have been a welcome companion
to any rancher or hunter in the American west. The top of the barrel is marked with the two-line address in front of the rear sight and the caliber marking at the breech. The upper right barrel flat is period stamped twice with “E.M. JONES”, who may have been a western retailer or a proud owner, and there is a “0” stamped on the
upper left. The two-line patent dates and serial number are on the lower tang. It is fitted with a Lyman beaded blade front sight, elevation adjustable notch rear sight, and a tang mounted peep sight. It is mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with a crescent buttplate.
CONDITION: Good, showing mostly a smooth bright grey patina and silvered remnants of the original case colors with some scattered light pitting, having the appearance of a rifle that was used hard but well-cared for. The lightly sanded and reoiled wood shows similar signs of use with a few hairline cracks and the minor dings and scratches typical of a western working gun. Mechanically excellent. A rifle that would look right at home propped up against the fence post of a western ranch!

Desirable Antique Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Musket - Serial no. 367761B, 44 WCF cal., 30 inch round bbl., blue finish, walnut stock.
Manufactured in 1890 as a third model with integral dust cover rail and dust cover with serrations at the rear. The top of the barrel is marked with the two-
line address/King’s patent marking ahead of the rear sight and the caliber marking at the breech. The model designation is marked on the upper tang and
the serial number is on the lower, with the caliber designation repeated on the bottom of the cartridge elevator. It has the distinctive 30 inch barrel fitted with a block base blade front sight/bayonet lug and a military pattern folding ladder rear sight. It is mounted with the full length forearm that is retained with three barrel bands and a straight grip stock with sling swivels on the middle and the bottom of the buttstock, which is fitted with a trapdoor carbine buttplate. The left side of the buttstock has what appears to be a faintly carved script letter “A”, “H” or possibly initials.
CONDITION: Good, retains traces of the original blue finish with the balance having primarily thinned to a mottled grey-brown patina through years of service as a trusted longarm. The wood is also good showing the numerous minor dings, dents, carvings, and scratches scattered throughout telling the story of a working gun and possibly its original owner. Mechanically excellent. An honest gun that looks like it has stories to tell!
