Desirable Winchester Deluxe Model 1873 Lever Action 44-40 Rifle - Serial no.
227593, 44 WCF cal., 24 3/8 inch octagon bbl., blue/casehardened finish, deluxe walnut stock. The Winchester Model 1873 is famous as “The Gun that Won
the West” and was one of the most popular firearms in late 19th century America. Chambered in .44-40 W.C.F. and fitted with traditional sporting sights as well
as a peep sight and a deluxe pistol grip stock, this rifle would have made an excellent hunting rifle. It was manufactured in 1887 and has a German silver “Rocky
Mountain” blade front sight, adjustable sporting rear sight, standard markings, the third model guide rail and dust cover, Lyman tang peep sight, “2836 XX” on the lower tang
and “2836” repeated in the upper tang mortise and inside of the buttplate at the toe, checkered forearm and pistol grip stock with nice figure, and crescent buttplate (compartment empty). CONDITION: Good “out of the attic” and “frontier issued” appearance overall. The metal exhibits mainly dark brown and gray patina and retains traces of the original finishes. There is some mild oxidation and general moderate overall wear. The front sling swivel and lever latch are absent. The wood has distinct but partially smoothed checkering, moderate dings and scratches, and nice figure. Mechanically fine. This rifle looks like it was used out on a ranch in the West before being tucked away for many years and has a lot of character.
Estimate: 2,750 - 4,250
LOT 3028
Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action Saddle Ring Carbine with Factory
Letter - Serial no. 155563, 44 Henry RF cal., 20 inch round bbl., blue/bright finish, walnut stock. The Winchester Model 1866 “Yellowboy” or
“Improved Henry” was the first true Winchester and was highly successful and established Winchester as the world leader in repeating rifles in the late 19th
century. Carbines like this made excellent saddle guns out West and were popular with both pioneers and Native Americans. The rimfire and “gunmetal”
framed ‘66 remained popular even after the release of the Model 1873 in .44 W.C.F. The factory letter from 1975 lists this ‘66 as a carbine shipped on December 8, 1881.
It has a blade front sight on a block behind the front barrel band, reversed style notch and ladder rear sight, the two-line patent marking ahead of the rear sight, a saddle ring
smooth carbine stock and forearm, and slightly modified steel buttplate (compartment empty).
CONDITION: Fair with mottled brown patina on the iron, some light oxidation, attractive aged patina on the frame, a few replacement screws (current thumbscrew/lever catch doesn’t trap the lever), and moderate overall wear. The wood is also fair and has moderate dents and scratches, some cracks and chips mainly in the buttstock at the edges, and an added coat of gloss varnish finish. Mechanically functions fine. This classic Winchester ‘66 carbine looks like it saw some real use out in the West.
Estimate: 3,000 - 4,500
