LOT 1009
- Serial no. 982509, 44-40 WCF cal., 14 inch round bbl., blue finish, walnut
stock. Manufactured in 1929, this is an exceptional example of a Winchester
Model 92 Trapper’s carbine with a highly desirable 14 inch barrel and
chambered in the popular .44-40 W.C.F. cartridge. These compact carbines
were widely popular in the American West well into the 20th century, not
only with trappers, for whom they are named, but also farmers and ranchers,
who valued their significant firepower in a small package, as well as the
ability to pair them with a Colt “Peacemaker” in the same caliber.
These Trapper’s carbines generally saw hard use in harsh environments
for many years, leaving very few examples available to collectors in high
condition like this one. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms lists this
carbine as being removed from the purview of the National Firearms Act
and classified as a curio and relic and a copy of the
ATF exemption letter is included. It has Winchester factory oval proofs on
the barrel and receiver at the breech. The left of the barrel has the model,
trademark, and caliber marking. The upper tang has the three-line trademark
information, and the serial number is marked on the bottom of the receiver.
It is fitted with a pinned blade front sight, elevation adjustable notch rear
sight, and a saddle ring on the left of the receiver. It is mounted with a
smooth forearm and straight grip stock with a carbine buttplate.
CONDITION: Excellent, retains 90% of the original blue finish with some
scattered patches of mild handling wear showing a grey or brown patina and
some light brown speckling on the receiver. The wood is also excellent with
a few scattered light dings and dents. Mechanically excellent. Winchester
Model 92 Trapper’s carbines are rarely seen in high condition like this!
