CONDITION: Extremely fine with crisp engraving, distinct Damascus
patterns along the barrels, 95% plus original finish, and minimal
light age and storage related wear including very isolated hints
of oxidation. The wood is also exceptionally fine and has crisp
checkering, beautiful figure, and crisp carving. Mechanically
excellent. The case interior and accessories are very fine with minor
age and storage related wear, cracks and some scratches and dings
on the exterior, and strong gold finish remaining in the coat of arms
and on the accessories. This is truly an exemplary example of fine
European gunmaking in the 1860s and a fascinating historical artifact
presented by the controversial King of the Belgians: Leopold II.
Provenance: Presented by King Leopold II to Sir Charles George
Young; The W. Keith Neal Collection; The Clay P. Bedford
Collection; A Private Collection.
Estimate: 95,000 - 160,000
