LOT 1253
- NSN, 100 bore cal., 20 3/4 inch round bbl., bright finish, fruitwood
stock. This pistol was originally made in the early 17th century and was
subsequently embellished in the late 19th century, likely in the workshops
of Frederic Spitzer who supplied ornamented antique arms to the
burgeoning fine art market during the Victorian era, including several
pieces owned the Barons Nathaniel and Albert von Rothschild as well as
Sir Richard Wallace. The barrel, lock, and iron mounts feature extensive
relief chiseled and engraved ornamentation with gilt backgrounds
consisting of a wide array of classical and grotesque motifs, including
figures likely representing Mars, the Roman god of war.
The stock features finely carved staghorn inlays along the length
displaying coordinating motifs including birds on the forend tip, arrows,
serpents, bestial masks at the side plate, and male mask profiles at the
breech. Includes a metal display stand.
CONDITION: Fine with fading gold, gray and silver-gray patina on the
balance of the iron, distinct engraving and chiseling, and minor wear. The
stock is good with repairs, a few cracks, and distinct carving.
Lock untested.
Provenance: The Collection of the Barons Nathaniel and
Albert von Rothschild; A Private Collection.
Estimate: 50,000 - 75,000
